Travel Tips for West Yellowstone

The center of town

by annk

There is a main thoroughfare running through the center of town. It's lined with stores, saloons, restaurants and a few hotels, all designed with a rustic, western flare. In the distance a range of snow-capped mountains are in view.

Why are the bears here?

by annk

Grizzly & Wolf Center - Some were orphaned in the wild & rescued. Others were given a 2nd chance at life after becoming a nuisance in residental areas. Otherwise they would have been a threat to humans and would have eventually been destroyed.

Their habitat :
The bears are provided with a large indoor den away from each other and humans. During the day they are rotated from 1-3 times on the 2 acre outdoor habitat in social groupings. They spend anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours in the outdoor compound and their schedule varies daily.

Staying for one night

"Recovery"

I took in all the major sights of Yellowstone over a two day span in 2007. The midway point was a night in West Yellowstone. I got there after dark, so all I did was get a pizza and crash at the hotel. Here are my reviews of those two experiences.

Entrance to Yellowstone National Park

by BLewJay

At an elevation of 6,667 feet (and with a population of just 1,177 people), West Yellowstone is at the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The major industry is tourism and you'll find numerous outfitters and rental operations for various activities (e.g., snowmobiles, cross-country skiing, fly-fishing, hiking, horseback riding). In addition to the activities mentioned above, you'll find many other things to do. There is a Yellowstone IMAX Theater, the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center, Madison River Canyon Earthquake Area and Museum of the Yellowstone to name a few. If you are looking for a place to eat, you'll find that there is a good selection of cuisine in town. With large portions, great prices and excellent service, you won't go hungry.

Wildlife

by christi_arne

"Bufallo"

Bison, or buffalo once roamed the West in the millions but had reached near extinction by 1900. Bison are often seen in the Firehole River and Old Faithful thermal basins, plus the Hayden and Lamar valleys. Take care staying a good distance from the bison, especially in early August which is their rutting season.

"Buffalo"

"Elk"

Elk make a strange sound called "bugling" in the autumn as they compete for dominance during the rutting season. You may see males and their harems of females called "cows" at the edges of forested areas. The summer herd is approximately 30,000.
