Travel Tips for Gering

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument

by Toughluck

Take a drive the 30 miles (48 k) north on Nebraska 29 to Agate Fossil Beds. Here, you'll find a unique story of the early age of Mammals. For lots of things to do see my Agate page. Yes, there is enough to do to keep you busy all day. No place nearby to stay. Make it a day trip, but give yourself a day. Include either early morning (tough with the drive up) or stay until near sunset. It's worth the time. Of course, it's nicer if the temperature is down below 80 F (27 c).

I practically lived in Gering, since I actually lived in its sister city, Scottsbluff, across the river. The picture attached is the Gering side of the monument. Gering is actually the older city of the two, but both are very historically significant. Whether you're interested in the history of fur trading, Oregon/Mormon Trails, or the Indian wars-Scottsbluff/Gering is a good area to visit!
