...not talk about the Huskers....
by oldsmochick
...not talk about the Huskers. I've lived in Nebraska for 21 years, seriously don't like the Huskers because of their fans. They'll comit suicide if the Huskers lose a game. Quote Husker fan, 'Huskers lose one game, they're the worst team in the country.' (Doesn't matter if they're 11-1) Winning the vote on the new entertainment arena on May 16, 1999 that STILL HASN'T BEEN BUILT!! (They just got around to mowing the lawn back in August 2001)
Omaha is chock-full of bizarre...
by miruka
Omaha is chock-full of bizarre goodness. There are an insane number of Greek and Thai restaurants. Go to them. As many as possible. You won't be disappointed... Also visit Ahmad's persian restaurant in the old market. It's a tiny little hole in the wall, but the best Iranian food anywhere.
If you are in the mood to shop, visit one of the Elan Furniture stores, a modern furnishings panacea. Also consider visiting Aki Oriental, on 84th St, south of I-80, or one of the other Asian markets.
If you are a golfer, visit one of the year-round, climate controlled indoor driving ranges. They look a bit like enormous beached jellyfishes fron a distance. (Chili Greens is the best) For video games, visit Family Fun Center, a disturbing large Video Arcade (purportedly the largest in the Midwest), and play pretty much any video game ever created. (Or in my case, just play Dance Dance Revolution -- which ever latest mix they have managed to snag from the bowels of Japan, until you fall over dead from exhaustion)
Italian for everyone
by Toughluck about Spaghetti Works
I think of the Spagehetti Factory as every day Italian. The kids will find something they like, you can experiment in a twist of flavors or opt for the Omaha standard, steak. Fancy only in the quality for which it's served and the seating in the old railroad diner car (ooops, that's no longer there. Sorry, it was great). The kids will be occupied while you wait. It's one of the few places I'd feel comfortable taking young kids. Spaghetti, of course. Baked lazagna and the sirlon.
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo
by rsleisk
Omaha's zoo was a worthwhile visit. There are lots of great exotic animals to see. I especially liked the Rain Forest and the desert Bio-dome. The Rain Forest gives you a sense of what it would be like to walk through one with animals in the water and flying and climbing through the trees. There is a cool suspension bridge you can walk on.
The Desert Bio-Dome was very interesting. The climate-controlled exhibit had the various animals of the African desert. We enjoyed the Meerkats and their quirkiness.
All in all the zoo is not too expensive and offers a great way to spend the day.
