A few tips for survival (j/k)
by kingbk
1. Husker football is life here. When the Huskers lose, the city is basically in shut-down mode. Never talk bad about the team. Wear red on game days if you want to blend in. The way people follow the Huskers is kind of sickening sometimes. Oh yeah, and if you really want to get a local fired up, ask about Frank Solich and Steve Pedersen... that should get them talking! ;)
2. Warren Buffett is the number one celebrity here. Tom Osborne was a close second, but since he stepped down from coaching football, you don't here about him as much these days. Sometimes you'll also hear filmmaker Alexander Payne, singer Conor Oberst, band 311, and actor Chris Klein as famous Omaha natives currently and Gerald Ford, Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando and Henry Fonda as famous natives past.
3. People will love to talk up about how great Omaha is or how much it is growing. Omaha is growing, but not nearly at the same rate as other places. It's also not as great as people make it out to be. Just take it with a grain of salt, nood your head and move on.
4. Omaha is big on when a new chain restaurant comes to the city. It'll make front pages.
5. A lot of people are related somehow to Creighton University.
6. Dana Altman, coach of Creighton Basketball, is like god here.
Arrogance and Pretentious
by cochinjew about The Natural Food Cafe
I wanted to try this place and it was on a sunday morning. the service was so slow that after 40 minutes nothing had happened. the server was very morose . the place had many young and enthusiastic college students serving but i had the misfortune of getting a man who curtly said: we dont have milk for your coffee.. nothing came anyway. so i decided to leave, very rarely do i leave restaurants. a spent blonde, elderly who had spent too much time in the sun, was at the till and i was told that she was the manager, when i told her that i had been waiting for 40 minutes and I was leaving, she arrogantly said: okay good bye without even an apology. She has lost a customer but all my friends from the area will know about it and it has brought lots of bad feelings towards the restaurant . I shall not go there again . my eating partner for this restaurant is my dear Mi Hu Sa, my UmonHon Indian friend with enormous aethetic talent. I am glad she is in Omaha currently so I get to see her on each of my visits to the reservation of her people. She also promised not to go there any more, nor her friends.
I do not recommend this place.
Great Service, Real Italian
by Toughluck about Vivace
Visiting Omaha with a friend from the Ozarks, we had to find a good Italian Restaurants. The Ozarks are not known for Italian cooking or even residents. Vivace was the choice and what a choice. Friendly people, especially as the group grew from 4 to 8, to 15 that evening. The staff went out of their way to provide us with a comfortable area, where we could chat and catch up on the world and life around us. Baked Lasagna was excellent, Calamari, and a wide range of pasta. The few diehard mid-westerners found excellent steaks and chops.
This is a list:
The Henry...
by miruka
This is a list:
The Henry Doorly Zoo
The Joslyn Art Museum
The SAC Museum
Nebraska Furniture Mart (just for the sheer absurdity)
The Old Market
The Gene Leahy Mall
Dundee (just a really nice neighborhood, with actual character)
Chip Davis' giant Piano-House
Omaha is strange, there seems to be something odd hidden just about everywhere. If it doesn't look like it belongs, be sure to check it out.
ITS ALL HAPPENING AT THE QWEST CENTER
by Rich62
THIS IS OMAHA'S NEW EXHIBITION HALL AND MEETING CENTER. Here you will find concerts, conventions and more. For example, on the weekend previous to this writing, the Qwest hosted the Blue Man Group, a huge classic car show, and the Women of Faith convocation, while preparing for a Bon Jovi concert.
