Travel Tips for Omaha

Holy Family Shrine

by Toughluck

The story of the Holy Family Shrine begins with the intervention of the Holy Spirit within a few people. These people are of diverse backgrounds with little chance to meet until the Holy Spirit united them spiritually with an idea of the Holy Family Shrine. Through a unique and divine series of events, these people discovered they had been enlightened to the same idea. This idea was to create a place off of Interstate 80 for travelers to pray and discover the Catholic faith. These travelers would not only be of the road, but of a spiritual voyage on earth.

The shrine is a place intended to bring Roman Catholics back to the Church and to bring others to the Church. We found it a comforting place that brought peace and comfort. The various Roman Catholic images, i.e., crucifix, while uncomfortable, did not get in the way of this non-catholic from being at peace. I recommend a visit to any person of faith, regardless of which faith or demonination you have chosen. See my Holy Family Shrine travelogue for more pictures.

TIME FOR BRUNCH!

by Rich62 about TAXI'S

WE HAD A NICE SUNDAY BRUNCH THERE. I had their quiche special of the day. Very tasty indeed, no complaints here. My wife and cousin, as I recall, had omlettes which looked delicious and they seemed to enjoy them immensely! Having only been there once, I don't know what my favorite will be!

Great Bars in Omaha

by omahan

Here's my top 5 great (and somewhat hidden) bars to go to in Omaha.
Oh, a little about me, I'm a 21 yr. old college student. Though all of the bars I suggest are visited by all age groups having an ID that looks at least semi-legal.

1. Cresent Moon Ale House - 54th and Farnam - enjoy great German beers at the Huber Haus, a German beer hall downstairs. It has 31 beers on tap upstairs and many bottle beer as well. However, you must go downstairs and try "THE BOOT" - you just won't know if you don't go.
2. Dundee Dell - 5007 Underwood Ave - in the great Dundee neighborhood (midtown) which can't be missed when visiting Omaha. Great food here too (try the fish and chips). Another close bar to the Dell is the Underwood, which has great darts and a pool table.
3. Homy Inn - 1510 N Saddle Creek Rd - Famous for it's Champagne on tap (you can get it in pitchers), this small bar is also noteworthy because of it's old decor. Newspaper clippings from who knows when are plastered on the wall and liquor bottles line the ceilings covered with dust. Oh, and go ahead and bring over some pizza from Sgt. Peppers across the street!
4. Mr. Toad's -1002 Howard St - a classic in the old market British pub. Atmosphere makes you want to dig in to a good book, if you weren't already downing a great beer.
5. Dubliner Pub - 1205 Harney St - also in the old market, this Irish pub has live music on the weekends. Can be hard to spot, it's actually underground.
Other bars to check out
The 49'r - 49th and Dodge - alternative 20 somethings
Billy Frogs - 1102 Howard - typical college fair
Blue Sushi Sake & Grill - 14450 Eagle Run Dr- not really a bar, but go for great martinis & sushi
Cheesburger in Paradise - 17304 Davenport - in village point, jimmy buffet's place serving the best looking drinks quite popular with families
Travoto's - 5013 Underwood Ave - best live music in dundee, also popular for an older crowd
Upstream Brewing Co. - 514 S 11th St - try their 8 original beers!

Gerald R. Ford Birthplace

by Tom_Fields

The late President Gerald R. Ford was born in Omaha. He late moved to Michigan, became a Congressman from Grand Rapids, and eventually became President.

The original house where he was born is now gone, but a charming little garden was planted in its place. He once visited here, and there is a historical plaque to mark the occasion.

Omaha, NE

by OnTheSiouxFallsSub

"Downtown"

Downtown Omaha hosts many older buildings and a busy UP mainline. Omaha is the city the movie "About Schmidt" starts in, which features this building.

"UP Museum"

The Durham Western Heritage Museum is located in an old UP station and has many exhibits on assorted things. The inside is decorated in a cool art deco style, and you can go inside old UP passenger cars.
