Home of Top Gun
Fallon is a relatively small, quiet town. There are ample supplies and equipment for ranching and farming. If the winds are calm, the town will no doubt be full of the unmistakable smell of cows.
But if you are not into ranching, the cattle business or a top notch fighter pilot, Fallon will just be a pit stop and opportunity to get your last supplies before continuing on to the more remote areas.
Fallon is the home of TOPGUN [the U.S. Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor (SFTI) course.]
TOPGUN was established on March 3, 1969 at NAS Miramar, California. It was school established to train Fleet fighter pilots in air combat to counter the relatively poor air combat performance being experienced by Navy aircrews over Vietnam.
In 1996, the transfer of NAS Miramar to the Marine Corps was coupled with the incorporation of Top Gun into the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) at NAS Fallon, Nevada. TOPGUN instructors currently fly the F/A-18 Hornet and the F-16 Falcon.
[The USAF has its similar flight school, USAF Fighter Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.]
Fallon is about 100 miles from Reno, which means it is about halfway to Austin on US50.
