Let's face it; there are dozens of great tips here on VT that will tell you how fabulous the Luxor is. And it really is a great hotel. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and the service is exceptional. So I won't waste time telling you all that again. Nope, I'm going to tell you about the only two bad things I encountered during my stay. Just so you know, I've spent more nights in Hotels than most Vegas hookers, so I have some experience with hotels. I found the Luxor to be very good, and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone looking for a good, relatively inexpensive hotel. So without further adieu, here is the first drawback:

Drawback One - The Bathroom: A great, big, luxurious bathroom. In the Tower portion of the hotel there is a spacious tub and a roomy shower stall. It's tiled from floor to ceiling but the walls are paper thin and allow any sounds to be easily heard from within the room. 'So what?' you say... Well, if you're visiting Vegas on a romantic get away, the last thing you want your mate to hear is the noises of the Pharoah's Pheast leaving your body. The Luxor buffet is hard to resist, but the next morning won't be pretty. A simple bathroom fan would have been a nice touch here. (and don't even think about a courtesy flush - not with the water-saving toilets!) For the second drawback of the Luxor, please see the next tip...

Flamingo Las Vegas: Great location   Compare Rates NEW!

  • After talking to some american colleagues at work, I was recommended this hotel as being affordable and very central. I was not dissapointed. We arrived and had someone come up to us immediately to park the cark for us. I did not know it at the time but it was free for guests. I had heard a lot about the long check-in queues, but we waited less than 10 minutes which is really nothing. I guess we were lucky (we arrived at around 16.00) as there were many more people when we came back down after unpacking. The person at the front desk was not very friendly, so when I asked for a room with a view, I was expecting to get the closet under the stairs, after all, I had only paid $75 for a double room. I was wrong, we actually got a room with a nice view over the strip (see picture) on a high floor (13-14, I can't remember). The room was more than appropriate, it had high-speed internet access (for $9.95), two queen beds (I had asked for a king, but was told I had to wait about an hour to get one as there was none available) and even a safe. Location is great! Right in the center of the "Strip", in front of Caesar's Palace and next to Bally's and Paris. Check-out was a breeze, no queue at all. I have two minor complaints, however. - The elevators/lifts take a very long time to arrive and at least twice, were dirty (juice and ice-cream on the floor). - In the morning (around 9 A.M), the maids started cleaning the rooms and made more noise than I have ever heard. They were yelling at each other, for at least 2 hours! That was extremely annoying (specially, because we had gone to sleep at 5 A.M.) So, basically, what you get is a great location, excellent price (if you can get a deal like I did - this was actually one of the cheapest hotel we stayed in during our 2-week US trip) and a "no-frills", but very efficient service. I would stay here again.

    Location, price.

  • Most annoying iron ever. - Las Vegas
    Most annoying iron ever.
    by RobDavis

OK, as I said in my other Luxor tip, the hotel is great and I highly recommend it... but here is the second of the two drawbacks I felt obligated to point out... The Iron and Ironing Board: I know many people don't care about the iron, but I consider it critical to any decent hotel to have an iron and an ironing board. I was satisfied to see the Luxor had an easily accessible ironing board in one of the two spacious closets. (the closets have lights, too, by the way). But my complaint with the iron is that it is an extremely cheap iron, and even more annoying, is that it is securly fastened to the ironing board with a short wire. This severely limits your ability to iron your clothes, because you can't move the iron very far. I know the Luxor pays close attention to ancient Egyptian decor, but this ancient custom of making the iron theft-proof goes just a little too far. Free the iron, Luxor! Free the iron!!

Oh, and the iron spewed water all over my dress shirt when I tried to press my shirt. Not cool.

Bally's Las Vegas: Comfort, with understated class   Compare Rates NEW!

  • We have stayed at Bally's for years, and have yet to be disappointed. They have changed rooms for us because we weren't fond of the view, and have often upgraded us in the process. This was not done because we're great gamblers, or because they know us personally, no, they did it to keep the customer coming back. The rooms are spacious, border on the luxurious, and the restaurants and shops within the complex are good. Plus, you don't have to fight your way past all the machines to get to the front desk. Clear sailing from the door to the clerk. Ballys is blessed with The Big Kitchen, a buffet which is superior to others on the strip. It also has a coffee shop which offers fantastic Prime Rib, at a ridiculous low price, and It is difficult to beat the quality. You have to ask about this deal, because I don't remember if it is available all the time, or just late in the evening. They also have great chicken wings that my mother-in-law just loves. Too hot for me though.

The casino floor is large, lots of nickel machines, and a wonderful selection of slots to keep you happy, however the floor is so easy to navigate. If you are looking for a member in your party, you can overlook the floor from the elevated section which consists of desk clerks and shops, and the additional height gives you a greater advantage over other casino. Finding friends or family members is a snap. You also are centrally located on the Strip, and have direct access to The Paris Casino, with most major casinos just minutes away.

Mirage Resort & Casino: Magnificent Mirage   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Built in 1989 by Las Vegas hotel impresario Steve Wynn The Mirage may now have been eclipsed by other more luxurious resorts such as the Bellagio, Venetian and Mandalay Bay but in terms of ambience, comfort and service it more than holds its own against recent competitors. The location of the hotel, on the centre part of The Strip is ideal. For romantics it is a short stroll to the gondolas of The Venetian, for retail therapists the Forum shops at Caesar’s are almost next-door. However, those are outside the hotel and, before you venture further afield, there is plenty within the hotel to keep you pleasantly distracted for quite a time. There are a number of restaurants and bars, a small shopping arcade, a miniature Palm House in the atrium, an aquarium behind the front desk, a spa and fitness centre, a wonderful pool, a Dolphin Habitat, Secret Garden, theatre, Volcano (yes, that’s right, a volcano!) – and that is before you even consider the casino! Phew! Orientating yourself with what is in the hotel – and finding your way to whichever of the 3,323 rooms you are staying in - may take some time. The general theme of the hotel is Polynesian, though this is presented in quite a subtle way. The lobby is decorated in marble and wood with beautiful light fittings in a flower and leaf design. The atrium, closed over by a glass dome, is full of tropical palm tress, flowers and a waterfall! There is even a smell of vanilla in the air.

The room we stayed in was smallish but very nice and quietly decorated in shades of reddish brown. There was a larger wardrobe/dresser facing the bed and this also included room for the TV, safe, and mini-bar. By the window was a small seating area with a table and chairs, the bed –a king-size - was eminently comfortable and a great place to rest and stretch out your aching legs! The bathroom was great – two sinks, a separate shower stall and a whirlpool bath – luxury. We were very lucky to have an upgrade to a 24-floor room with a view of the volcano, strip and the mountains in the distance. If you can get a strip view go for it, however, even without that the rooms provide a pleasant space to relax and reload your senses before heading of to the delights of Vegas. Service was extremely friendly, helpful and efficient and that applied to everyone we saw and had dealings with from the front desk clerks to the housekeeping staff, waitresses and casino security. The Mirage is not a cheap place to stay but I would say that you get good value for money in terms of service and amenities and also an experience that, like the rest of Vegas, will provide enjoyable memories for a long time to come.

  • The Plaza Hotel is at the top of Freemont Street. It is old style Vegas for sure. The rooms are worn but very clean and comfortable. I like the convience of being right at the tip of the downtown Freemont Experience yet easy access to the parking garage.

The Plaza has a nice pool area with a jogging track and tennis courts. If you get a room in the North tower request a view and you can get a great view overlooking Freemont Street.

I was very disappointed in the Paris Hotel. The casino and shopping were wonderful. I found customer service lacking in every guest area except the spa, that was a wonderful experience. Unfortunately the spa didn't make up for my disappointment in the bell-persons, housekeeping staff and others. This is one of the worst experiences I have had in Las Vegas hotels. Despite talking with the concierge several times during my short stay, I did not see any changes in the lack of service provided by this hotel. Worth a look-see, but not a stay.

No one helped me with my bags despite searching for a bellhop, and I ended up dragging my bags across the cobblestones of the casino to get from the shuttle drop off to registration. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but for this trip I had extra baggage for a conference and really needed help. I found service at the poolside restaurant very poor. I sat at a table, ignored completely for over 45 minutes. I finally walked to the kitchen and asked if they were still serving. After this I did get served, but the food was only so-so. Another annoyance was that the housekeepers came in at all hours of the day without knocking. Of course the first time this occured I was changing my clothes. The casino was beautiful, and shops were fun. The streetside restaurant served wonderful escargot (sp?) and the service there was heavenly. But after my return to the streetside restaurant in 2006, they too have gone the way of the rest of the Paris enterprise. I no longer find this a place I'll choose to go to in my future travels to Las Vegas.

    My room at Treasure Island.

I really enjoyed my stay at Treasure Island. I rented a car between moving there from Barbary Coast , and it was easy to park though I didn't take advantage of valet parking.

The room was very nice, a little more plush than Barbary Coast, but I honestly can't remember spending much time in it. The casino was better to me than I expected, as I'd always heard how "tight" it was, but I had good luck (relatively speaking) when I varied from my usual video poker to play a silly nickel slot machine called something like Alien Family Reunion. The breakfast buffet did not measure up to the buffets at many hotels in either selection or quality, it was more like a cafeteria setup, but as I like milk, coffee AND juice w/ my breakfast, buffets are usually less expensive than buying all my drinks at a regular restaurants. I saw Mystere at Treasure Island while I was staying, and it was spectacular. It will go under my "must see if you feel like splurging" tips. Since I stayed there Treasure Island has changed its name to "TI", supposedly more adult, and the free pirate battle is now sexier "Sirens of TI". I forgot to take a photo of the neat pirate town facade when I stayed there, as it is probably now gone. The wind was blowing too hard to hold the pirate battle.

Wonderful hotel, great rooms, largest regular rooms in Las Vegas. They are supposed to be suites, but in reality is just a bi-level with an iron fence, but tastefully appointed. They do not afford any additional privacy for a family. Tremendous views from every room we've stayed in, and beautiful bathrooms.

Outstanding restaurants, great shopping, plus a canal complete with gondolas. (I don't recommend). I suggest you try the restaurants on the main floor, rather than restaurants surrounding St. Marks Square, with exception of Canaletto, which has fantastic steaks and pasta. If you think prices of Venetian glass is expensive in Venice, try the prices at The Venetian. Venice is bargain basement in comparision. One of the shops also offers the hand carved articles of clothing, (wood, of course) that is actually designed in Venice. Unfortunately, I can't remember the artists name, but his work is amazing, but pricey. (update...scultore is Loris Marazzi, S. Margherita, 2903)(phone 041 5239001)

I cannot help but recommend this resort to anyone that wishes to be surrounded by luxury, quality of service and options that are almost limitless. I have been wanting to stay at the Wynn since last year when I missed its April 2005 opening by mere weeks. You are greeted with a smile by valet and reception and you are never far from help within the resort if you need it. Everyone was attentive to both needs (and wants). The resort was spotless, well-equipped with the latest in technology inside each suite and on the ground floor and from the robes in the closet to the razors in the bathroom, everything a guest could need is either available or attainable. My room #3641 has an incredible view of the Strip and the remote-controlled floor to ceiling curtains was actually fun to use.

The Wynn offers so much that it becomes a destination and except for a walk across The Strip to the Fashion Mall and two restaurants there, I never wanted to leave the Wynn during the day (my nighttime adventures will be described elsewhere). There are 15 restaurants on property, a Tom Fazio golf course, a Ferrari-Maserati car dealership, the world's only dedicated Rolex store, an Esplanade of shopping that includes Cartier (and a 2.5 million dollar US ruby & diamond necklace), Oscar de la Renta, Louis Vuitton, and several Wynn exclusive shops. The spa is top of the line and includes a full salon, the show "Le Reve" is nothing less than spectacular, and the two featured nightclubs, Lure & Tryst, are always popular with all ages. The pools are large and spacious and there is a secluded European "topless" pool available. In addition, there are "shows" in the lake and waterfall area that separate the resort from the Strip and are only visible to guests within the resort. This sounds like a promo but I can state that during my stay I cannot think of a single negative experience and that is something rare.
