Island of Tranquility in Las Vegas!

Not only did this hotel prove to be a perfect Isle of Tranquility, but, to my surprise, it was also completely engaging and fun on its own terms. The Meridian’s location is central, and therefore ideal. It’s basically two blocks off the Strip, next to the Westin on one side and Flemings restaurant on the other. The Meridian was more expansive than I expected, with (I’m told) about 16-acres overall, including some impossibly perfect landscaping, romantic courtyards, that kind of thing. While this was no romantic getaway as far as I was concerned (I came on business, thank you very much), I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the Meridian offers about as perfect a locale for romance as I can imagine in Las Vegas. The hotel was also exceedingly business ready, with the kind of business-friendly amenities (free wireless in all suites, etc.) more commonly associated with established brands, such as Hilton.

Unique Quality: Inside and out – lobby, suite, and grounds – the Meridian conveyed a sense of style and sophistication. The design and architecture was first class, combining contemporary and classical design features in a manner that was both refined and under-stated (I should know, I dropped out of architecture school!). Did I mention fun? Despite the lack of a casino, there turned out to be plenty to hold one’s interest beyond pleasant sights and footpaths. To wit: two gorgeous swimming pools, complete with obligatory poolside cabana (really, every pool should have a stocked cabana), a dry-heat sauna, lighted tennis courts, and even racquetball. The property is a converted condo-hotel, so everything is all-sutie, including full kitchens, flat screen TVs, balconies, etc. I can’t say enough about this hotel!

A: "West Rim is closer to Las Vegas, but is a huge tourist trap. It isn't actually located inside Grand Canyon National Park. It's a privately run casino / resort type place."
