Do rental cars come with snow tires?
by coldny
We will be visiting the Reno area as we have many times but never in winter. We plan on coming the end of February. We plan on flying into Sacramento or Las Vegas to get a non stop flight because of disabilities. Do the car rental agencies furnish snow tires? Are we likely to need them? Which would be better roadwise not timewise to drive from to Reno?

You can get snow tires, but they're extra. There are some rental locations that will specifically require you to have them if you rent during the winter, but you still have to pay extra.
If you're worried about snow, then fly into Vegas and drive up. It's a lot longer, but you have much less chance of hitting any. Sacramento - Reno is typically either closed or plowed. Not much in between. Just don't drive it if it's bad. And Reno rarely gets a lot of snow.

I have rented cars with snow tires and never paid extra. You may need "snow chains" which should come with the car, be sure you tell the car rental agency that you will be driving in the snow. As for which highway, Interstate 80, freeway all the way, short and quick.

Just note that you are required by law to carry snow chains even if you have snow tires and/ 4 wheel drive. Personally I would rent a 4 wheel drive because the chance of you needing to put on snow tires with one is almost zilch.

As posted above, Reno itself does not typically have a lot of snow. And when it does, the services are quick to clear the streets. The roads up to and around Truckee and the Lake can be a different story. However, the rental cars in Reno are usually outfitted with all-season tires.
Before you drive off the rental lot, look in the trunk to make sure you have chains.

As as above, check to see if there are chains in the trunks but if you possibly can, check the chains to make sure they the right ones for your tires. Rental car companies are notorious for just throwing in a set of chains to ease customer concerns. If you have all season/snow tires and a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive is is very unlikely that you will need chains. If the weather is that bad, you really don't want to be on the road anyway.
Travel Tips for Reno
The biggest little city in the world
by renojedi
I have lived here about 3 years and the best thing about this town is the fact that you get all the shopping and dining opportunities of California without the crowds or prices. It is a very clean town with little or no traffic and the people are freindly. The crisp air of winter and the snow--enough to enjoy and not enough to ruin your day. Then there are the warm summer mornings that make you want to get up and sieze the day. Fresh air is always a plus too.

participate in all summer & fall special events, such as:
Hot August Nights with all its 'Oldies Cars' and cruising downtown. Balloon Races, Camel Races, Best in the West Rib Cook Off, Basque and American Indian Festivals, and lots more. Reno has super hiking places in all directions.
The mountains are beautiful and full of wildlife, from Bears to Mountain Lions and Coyotes.
I would miss the convenience of just stepping out my back door and hike up the mountains or ski down the mountains within 30min.
Reno is great if you enjoy these activities.
Walkway Connecting Casinos in Virginia Street
by machomikemd
you can enter casinos without stepping out the street outside in Circus Circus to Silver Legacy Casino and El Dorado Casino. Lots of stuff going inside the walkway like slot machines, shops, restaurants, souvenir shops, bars, pubs, amusement centers and other stuffs that would induce you to gamble or spend more. it really entices the visual senses but I'm not falling for it hehehe, I may be a gambler but im not impulsive. the walkways are a convenient walk to hop in between these casinos and especially if the weather is cold outside but also it will induce you to gamble more or to buy more stuff and even to drink more since the alcoholic drinks here are free and you just give an $ 1 to 2 tip to the waitresses or bar hops near slot machines. it is about a 1/2 mile long walk and the exit is at virginia street near the Famous Reno Sign.
Pretty Autumn
by mcpangie
I made it through my first autumn in Reno. It is quite different here in the desert than in the forests of Alaska. But there are some pretty colors in people's yards (this is my own yard after snowfall one afternoon) and there were some lovely patches of colors in the Sierra Nevadas and along the Truckee River.
Virginia Lake's Outdoor Exercise Park
by mcpangie
At Virginia Lake there is a trail around the lake used by walkers, runners, parents stolling with their children, or people sitting and watching the birds. On one end of the lake there is an exercise area, one of those fitness courses.
