  • Fun experience, with minor annoying problems.

    by

I am a Salt Lake City resident and a (sometimes) regular patron of the Wendover Casinos, (mainly Montego Bay). I remember the days when the signs on the way to Wendover used to say "SUPER LOOSE SLOT MACHINES" They don't say that anymore and the machines reflect that. I don't remember winning anything larger than $100.00 on any machine in Wendover. But I do know that I have dumped thousands into them.

I am mostly a blackjack player at the casinos, as I rarely walk away from the machines with any more than I put into them. If it wasn't for the leisure play and the easy interaction with the machines and the decent timing of the cocktail waitresses, I wouldn't even bother with the machines. I use the machines as a place to relax and have a drink.

To me, on the tables is where the money is at! Unfortunately that's where most of the bad experiences come from. The problems are really simple though. Smokers for example, I am a non-smoker, and often find myself holding my breath because of other players. I usually spend less time on those tables and usually end up walking away annoyed and smelling like an ashtray. I don't necessarily find inexperienced players that much of a problem, but I do get annoyed when the dealer is constantly yelling at the new players. If I feel that if the new player is hitting too much and at the wrong times (steeling the dealers bust card), I simply move to another table.

Since I am quite often a regular at the casino, I often recognize other casino regulars as well. One (chain smoking) feller, With whom I have given him a private nickname of "chimney" is a quiet but rather spontaneous $75.00 a hand player. He is a regular on the $25.00 table. And often looses quite a bit of money. But besides that, he seems to hit and stay at the right times. When I play with him, I just try to find a spot three or for spots away from him. As I often bet anywhere from $25.00 to $1,000.00 per hand, depending on the good and bad vibrations of the table and skill levels of other players. The $25 dollar table tends to attract the most skilled players, but that's not always the case.

As far as I know, there is only one $25.00 table. At least during the week days that's all I see, I don't know about the weekends or busy holidays. I am hardly there when it's fully packed.

Let's talk about the dealers! I have a strong preference for a certain night shift that works there. I just wish I knew their full schedule, for that would probably be the only times I would hit the casino, if I knew it. Once you break the ice with the dealers, many of them can be rather friendly. And those certain friendly dealers I seek out with a passion, gotta love those friendly dealers. On my quiet days, I seek out the quiet dealers that offer a genuine 100% professional no nonsense demeanor. I love the dealers entirety at Montego Bay! Especially that shift that works Monday nights and Tuesday nights. I don't know their schedule for sure, but if you see a dealer named Hugo there, save me a seat please?

The highly professional pit bosses rarely speak, as they quietly lurk in the dark shadows, (of the casino life). On that shift that I enjoy the most, there is a skinny gray haired pit boss to be named "nameless." He often (professionally) walks around and just goes through the motions of being a pit boss. He can often seem to be tired of his job as his greetings and salutations by the patrons are met with a (hilarious) whatever type of response. One night a player once said... "Hey XXXXXXXXXX how are you doing?" The boss turned around (walked away from him) and replied "Hey great how are you" It was kinda like, WHO ARE YOU, WHY ARE YOU TALKING TO ME, HERES A RESPONSE, AND IM DONE SPEAKING TO YOU" lol Even though this boss does not have an ounce of humor in him, I really find his casual behavior and his lack of emotions as very humorous. The other night when I was walking through and checking out the tables, I made eye to eye contact with (said boss) and the boss said in a low audible tone to himself.... "and there he is again, and there he goes" he cracks me up, lol. After all is said and done, I think he has given me more in comps than any other pit boss (per gambling session). I like him a lot, he's great!

The rooms. I like all the rooms, but if you want the best hotel room experience. Ask for a room in the new section. When I stay over night, I prefer the mini sweets in the new section (with a hot tub, fridge and sauna/shower). Its an upgrade fee of about $35.00 more but hey, I bet more than that in one hand, so to me its well worth it!

The Restaurants. Their fine, nothing to brag about but I have no complaints against them. The staff there are fantastic, kind, courteous and normally quick and efficient. As a habit, I usually just eat at the Montego Bay, Peppermill, or Rainbow. I think the fanciest restaurant would be the overly expensive steakhouse across the street from the Montego Bay.

Unique Quality: All in all, Montego Bay is my favorite place to be on Monday nights and Tuesday mornings.

Good rooms in the new section, and many friendly blackjack dealers.
The place can be more expensive than the other casino's, but as the saying goes.
"You get what you pay for"

after travelling there for the past six years, twice a year, this is the LAST. Customer service - there isn't any. Restaurants - gone down hill fast. Hopes of winning in casino, less than in the past. And be careful about your special "2 nights free" coupons; if you don't mention them when you check in you lose them. We didn't even have them yet; received them mid-week and have always been able to use them in the past, not this trip. SO LONG MONTEGO BAY. All good things come to an end and they don't seem to care.

I would definitely not recommend them any longer. Elko is much more friendlier and we have had much more success there over Wendover.

Unique Quality: not much stands out in the past couple visits.

  • Never again at Montego Bay!

    by

I would never stay at Montego Bay in Wendover again. Terrible customer service, unfriendly staff and old rooms that are falling apart. This casino wants your money but doesn't want to give you much in return!!! Oh, and remember to bring your GPS to navigate the labyrinth of hallways that you have to trek through to get to your room. Internet is 8.00 a day, there is no business center and there are NO free channels on the tv.
...Fair warning, there is little else to do in Wendover except gamble so more than a day or two and most people who aren't fascinated with all the bright lights and noise will get bored.

Unique Quality: ...The bright spot was the concert hall. We saw Skynyrd there...thank heavens they were playing two nights because it really was the only form of entertainment. The concert hall is a 1000 seat venue and EVERY seat in the house is a great one! The staff at the concert hall were friendly and courteous and made our visit very pleasant.
...I would strongly recommend that you visit ROMANZA RISTORANTE ITALIANO. This was possibly one of the finest Italian restaurants I have ever been to. Gus, our waiter, was incredible. I would go back just for this restaurant and nothing else!

    Directions: Middle of nowhere!

    The best choice in Wendover

    by

The Montego Bay Resort was a nice suprise. Very spacious rooms and excellent beds. We had a double king room and it was great. The room itself was a bit dark in the evening as the lighting seemed to be all on one side of the room. Having a black carpet and dark walls did not help. The bedding was very nice and the beds comfortable. Nice flat screen TV on the wall and a small table and chairs for eating or reading was a nice addition. The hotel offers wifi but I always bring my own because it seems to work faster. There is a desk and chair on one side of the room for working at your computer or other things. Bathroom was large with the toilet tucked away around a corner for privacy. Had a phone near the toilet so you could call for TP I suppose. :) Double king rooms also have duel sinks in the bathroom which makes getting ready to go much easier.

Unique Quality: The hotel has an outdoor seasonal pool and a workout room on the 3rd floor. There is also a Spa that offers facials, manicures, facials etc. Appointments are suggested. The lobby has a computer for public use but the mouse is very erratic. If you are a gambler you can book a trip to Wendover thru the Peppermill and possibly get your room and flight comped 100%. This is how we discovered Wendover.

Classiest Rooms

by A TripAdvisor Member

We had always stayed at the Rainbow. But since The Silver Smith changed to Montego Bay we have enjoyed this hotel above the "others". The rooms are extra large and very classy. The only thing that is lacking is the lighting in the bathrooms. They are very low light in my opinion. But overall, a great place to stay. It is our 1st pick when visiting.

Used to be the Silver Smith, but new ownership resulted in a renovation that is still going on. Very nice and spacious rooms, though refirbishing eliminated the balconies, so no fresh air. Casino area is done well and the 2 for 1 Prime Rib buffet (Sun. - Thurs) is an excellent value (and good food) in a pleasant atmosphere. Question is, will their expansion make this too large of a hotel and eliminate some very nice views out to the desert? Had to replace a non-working clock-radio, but maintenance was prompt and efficient in responding. Overall a very good experience in a small, easy-to-negotiate town with a WWII historical airfield that is a throwback in time. Also, an easy and interesting 2-hr. drive from Salt Lake City that includes the Great Salt Lake, Saltair, two lakeside salt-processing plants, and the Bonneville Salt Flats where land-speed records are attempted.

An Oasis

by A TripAdvisor Member

We have stayed at the Montego Bay Casino Resort on three ocassions, our last being in May, and obviously we really think highly of their facilities. The rooms are well laid out and furnished nicely and very clean. Views are pretty cool if, like us, you appreciate the desert. The casino is a blast and the personnel are consumer friendly. Even the pit bosses are affable. The restaurant is plesant and the food is good. When not gamming there are some nice sight seeing opportunities around Wendover. The old air base is worth seeing as well as Bonniville Salt Flats. Since your only a couple of hours from Salt Lake City, an easy day trip there is fun. As I said in the begining, Montego is well worth the money and for us a true oasis in the middle of the desert.

New Addition

We enjoyed our 1st.stay at Montego Bay so much we had to return for another 4 night stay. Everything was fine except Alarm Clock was not turned off by maid, and woke us at 5 a.m. Ugh!
We enjoyed the Pool and watched the Construction workers hard at work on the new rooms.
Shuttle is free to the other 2 Peppermill Hotels,Rainbow and Peppermill. Rooms are large and above average.Food and drinks very good.
See new pictures just taken Oct.23 as we drove by to Vegas.
You will enjoy your stay at Montego Bay, we did and would return.

Feeling pampered

by TripAdvisor Member utah100

The rooms at this hotel/casino are some of the best I have ever stayed. They were exceptionally clean and luxorius. The casino and restraunts also were well designed for comfort and luxory. We enjoyed the experience completely. The entertain was also above average for a lounge/bar.

NOT what we expected-----sad to say

by TripAdvisor Member MaryMac54

It started with reservations. The page said $39.95 when we made our reservations a month ago. Upon arrival they had increased--and so did our price. We could have stayed across the street at the equally nice Golden Nugget for $29.95!! But we opted to try--only to be told the spa and pool were closed for reconstruction. I had asked at the time we made reservations and was assured that all would be well. NOT even close!!! The Players club was interesting as one person was working and other customers kept interrupting our 'time' with her to ask and recieve quick answers to their questions rather than take a place in line. The comps WERE excellent at time of check-out. The buffet wasn't what we expected. The service was lacking. The cashier wouldn't accept our coupon because it was expired---yet it was being used on the day we got it, for the day we got it. When my husband (a former restuarant manager of 14 years threatened to call her boss she accepted the coupon.) We asked for water as soon as we were seated--and it was nearly 2/3s of the way into our meal before it was brought to our table. The food was good-but not as plentiful as to what we have been accustomed in smaller places.

The room was exotic--complete with a palm tree in the room. The water ran all night-and the toilet seat was cracked. When we mentioned it to house keeping they laughed!!!

We wanted to use room service and rent movies--but someone at the front desk had put a lock on our credit card. It wasn't until the next day that the management realized it was an error--and said it was a mistake. NO apology however.

The music in the casino was extremely loud. The crowd there on a Thursday night was NOT a young group, and many were finding it discomforting to have the noise and somewhat gross lyrics repeating.

It was an experience we'll never forget. The Golden Nugget was cleaner, brighter, and seemed much calmer. If it's Vegas you want--bright lights, rudeness and falsehoods, then by all means book the Montego Bay. Otherwise---look and book elsewhere.

Montego Bay was great

by TripAdvisor Member buckybadger_1

We took a Max Air flight to W. Wendover at end of March and loved the flight and the entire gambling junket. We stayed at Montego Bay and either walked or took the free shuttle. Comps were good; bright colors and lights in the casino but never noticed the music while playing the slots. People were friendly and we plan on going back. I have submited a few photos from our trip.

Worst ever. West Wendover, Nevada

by A TripAdvisor Member

My wife and I have been going to Wendover nearly every April for 35 years and our stay in April 2006 was the worst yet ! 1. Had to repair our own toilet, it wouldn't flush. Called for repair with no resaults. 2. Reserved a non-smoking room. OUR ROOM SMELLED AS THOUGH IT WAS A SMOKING ROOM. Montego Bay needs to devote an entire floor for non smokers. SECOND HAND SMOKE KILLS. 3. Had a very rude attendant when checking. demanded a credit card number, even though I planned to pay cash.
We totally felt unwelcome for the first time ever, and we will reserve a room in another hotel next year in Wendover for sure.

Love the montego bay

by TripAdvisor Member traveler12338

we have stayed at the montego bay 2 times, the rainbow 4 times, and the peppermill 1 time. We really enjoy our stay every time. We began going on the airmax since it started, and until recently felt the slot machines were fair. The last two times we have noticed a much lower payback from all 3 casinos. We know it's a gamble in any casino, but its not worth it if we can't even play for a short while without winning something.
The rooms have always been very clean and the food is fine. We feel that it is a perfect mini-vacation for the price. We just hope the machines have a better pay back in the future.
