Mount Washington Hotel and Resort by deecat Now this hotel is, indeed, a grand masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture. It took two years and 250 master craftsmen to complete The Mount Washington Hotel. The idea was conceived by industrialist Joseph Stickney and was opened in 1902. Since that opening day, it immediately became a favorite summer haunt for poets, princes, presidents, and just everyday people. It's now a National HIstoric Landmark, and today (as throughout its history), the hotel has been renowned for luxurious extras, natural beauty, and unbelievable service. The decor of the rooms and public spaces reflect the elegance and sophistication of yesteryear. The indoor pools, health spa, and fireplaces are a few of the reasons Mount Washington Hotel remains a place where people return for years and years.
The resort has 27 challenging holes of golf on a course with spectacular views. In addition, there are 12 tennis courts, indoor, outdoor, and river swimming pools, bridle paths for horseback riding, Mountain biking, and hiking on miles of National Forest trails, and, best of all, leisurely carriage rides across the property. There's also a 4-Diamond Main Dining Room that is opened for dinner with even a serenading orchestra! (There's even a dancefloor!) There's also the Cave Lounge where you can listen to jazz and comtemporary music. We were absolutely amazed at the genuine kindness and attentiveness of the staff. Our room was beyond beautiful and well equipped yet of another era. Mount Washington Hotel and Resort by deecat I personally do not feel that other resorts can even compete with Mt. Washington as far as being grand and in delivering pomp on such an immense scale. When Joseph Stickney (railroad tycoon) conceived the idea of this hotel, he set a new standard for luxury. There were electric lights, an indoor pool, private baths for each room, Tiffany lamps, and elegant chandeliers--this was all unique and extravagant for the times. How sad to know that Joseph Stickney died just one year after his creation opened to the public. Stickney's widow remarried to a prince--Prince Carolyn Aymon de Faucigny-Lucinge. Sadly, he died soon after the marriage! But, the widow continued to run the hotel. Currently, a consortium of investors owns The Mount Washington Hotel resort. They have certainly updated and renovated the place, making it even more splendid. They brought in the live orchestra for dinner and the authentic prohibition speak-easy lounge called The Cave. All along the Public Spaces, you are able to read about the history of this great, old hotel and how the Italian Craftsmen were imported (about 1000 +) to build and complete all the work here. It's fascinating.
A personal experience that our family had will give you an idea of the staff and guests at the Mount Washington Hotel. When we were there, Allan and I wanted to play golf, but our daughter Jill was too young to leave alone for four hours. Thus, we talked to a staff member who suggested leaving her with one of their most loyal and long-time guests--an 80 year-old-woman who had been coming here each year since she was six years old! The woman was quite the swimmer, so she volunteered to take Jill swimming in the indoor pool. They spent several hours enjoying the pool, playing pool volleyball, etc. After the swim and clean up, the two of them enjoyed afternoon tea together! It's a memory for our family that lingers...Kindness, thoughtfulness, and loyalty. These attributes describe the staff and the guests. the Frankenstein Cliff by richiecdisc Dry River is a great little campground with only 36 spots so it's best to reserve this if coming on the weekend. The spots are very roomy so you do not feel as if you are on top of your neighbor. We got there kind of late but it was very handy the next day as the rangers office is just up the road and great hikes too. We woke up and saw agreat sunrise on the Frankenstein Cliff that sits right next to the campground.
The spots are well-spaced and there are small pit toilets throughout as well as the very modern toilet/shower facility at the main entrance. It is a very nice campground and a bargain for only $15 a night per tent.

well located Greenleaf Hut by richiecdisc The Appalachian Mountain Club has set up a great system of huts throughout the White Mountains and they are deservedly popular. With great mountain settings and homey rustic atmospheres they are the perfect solution for those wanting to spend more time in the mountains. We did not have time to spend the night in one on this trip but would surely look into it for the next time.
The Greenleaf Hut is in a perfect location for doing the Franconia Ridge Trail. It is a very busy hut and not one to choose if you want solitude. That said, it was very comfy looking and the food smelled great. The prices for food were surprising not bad either. It is not cheap to stay in the nicer huts but meals are included and tough to argue with the location and views. Oh, but you must hike to get to the best of them, like the Greenleaf Hut.

We found this rental apartment with help of our Boston friends. Their neighbours own this large apartment there and we rented from them. Highly recommended! Nicely furnished, equipped with everything you need it has a large bedroom w/bathroom, balcony, another bathroom, huge living room with sofa(bed) + sitting area, dining area, perfect kitchen and a gallery upstairs with even another sitting area and some more beds. It sleeps up to 8 persons. The owners also provide a lot of information/brochures as well as games for entertainment. Our only disappointment was that we didn't see a bear during our stay:( About 100 m away was the clubhouse. They offer internet access there for a small fee; use of indoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna was free, towels were available for a deposit. They also had billard tables and some one-armed bandits :-) Oh, not to forget a large TV in front of which folks gathered to see the Red Sox or the Yankees.

Well....if I am being perfectly honest, I have to say the hotel was mediocre, at best. The room was not cleaned on a daily basis (dirty towels left in floor, trash left in trash can, etc.). However, while this is somewhat bothersome, I can look past all of that. The thing that bothered me the most and made me give this accommodation a poor rating was the service. We walked into the lobby, and neither person at the reservations desk acknowledged us. It wasn't like this on just one occasion. It happened at least 5 times....never were we spoken to (unless we asked a question or walked up to the desk.) How rude!
Close to the beach without having to pay astronomical prices...

Days Inn by Goner The Days Inn is downtown Dover, but wasn't particularly noisy. There is also a good seafood restaurant next door. They have a modest continental breakfast included with the price of the room. It was clean and comfortable.
They have an indoor pool that was inviting - bring a bathing suit, Theme: MotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 481 Central Avenue, Dover, NH 03820Phone: 603/742-0400Directions: Right on the main street of Dover.

Mary Keene in the Winter by Goner The Mary Keene House is a large home that has been converted into some interesting bedroom arrangements. It has quite a history about Mary Keene who once lived there and the new proprieter loves to tell you the stories connected to the house.
The house sits on a rolling lawn that takes you to the lake with a sandy beach. The lake is lovely and especially so with it surrounded by the autumn colors. The Kancamagus Highway (NH Route 112) meanders through the White Mountain National Forest between Interstate Rt 93 and NH Rt 16. Along the way there are several National Forest campgrounds. My favorites are Jigger Johnson and Covered Bridge campgrounds, but nearly all offer great family camping. . Keep in mind the conditions are VERY rustic. Most campgrounds do not have hot showers or flushing toilets, however, Jigger Johnson does have these amenities. Without showers, most folks bathe in the nearby Swift River using biodegradable soap, but even in summer, the water is mighty chilly! Even so, the scenery and available outdoor activities make it all worthwhile. .
See the website below for a complete listing of campgrounds and their amenities. Most campgrounds cost about $16 per night. .

by katie_park Henniker Motel... those three guys are from Costa Rica, and were co-workers of me... we four had stayed in the motel since it is the closest accomodation which is located in 5-min (or can be less)-walk distance from Pats Peak... i'm not pretty sure, 'cause i, as an international employee at Pats Peak, paid different rate... promise i'll check out the exact price sooner or later... probably, though, for single room, less than $30. per night...
this motel has indoor swimming pool so that you can enjoy skiing or snowboarding during daytime, and swimming when you get back to the motel... above all, the hostess, Julie is such a lovely, sweet old lady... i absolutely miss her... Theme: MotelOther Contact: this picture was taken on the ch
