Mt. Washington Hotel and Resort: Top of the line Resort Living

by CraigT

Our company trip destination landed us in luxury at the famous Mt. Washington Hotel and Resort at Bretton Woods. I don't know the rates but would imagine they are high. I know the food was very high. Dinner Buffet - $32.95. Breakfast Buffet- about $20. After a tiring day of hiking we chose room service. It took forever to get service (room service had an answering machine!) and when the food came it was slim pickens except for the price. Not room service as we were accustomed to. Breakfast room service of two bowls of oatmeal was $32. See Lloyd Hill's restaurant for area dining that is tasty and better priced.

There's no substitute for the glamorous hallways, meeting rooms and grand porch. The weather was perfect so it was great to sit on the porch in the comfortable chairs with wonderful views of Mount Washington. The grounds were well kept and inviting. The personnel were friendly and helpful although the concierge was worthless except to get maps.

There are many sizes of rooms. See if you can get a larger one. Ours was quite small but friends were thrilled with the spaciousness of theirs.

Spend time on the grand porch with great views of the surrounding mountains.

Mt Washington Resort at Bretton Woods: Bretton Woods

by Tom_Fields

I could not afford to stay here; instead, I chose a modest hotel nearby. But this is a beautiful hotel, and a great place if you have the money for it.

In 1944, as World War II drew to a close, representatives from the victorious Allied powers met here to discuss the post-war economic arrangement. The result was the original General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The GATT treaty paved the way for the huge post-war economic boom.

Bay Top Motel: Weirs Beach Romance Weekend

by remdawg33

Very close to the beach and boardwalk. Very convenient, quiet and inexpensive. We stayed the first night in a regular room, which was okay, it is not a room you would rather stay in than go out, but it was good and kept us more active. The second night we stayed in the jacuzzi room, and let me tell you it was great. For the extra $20 bucks or so for that room, we will keep going back.

The jacuzzi was nice because it is not "in" the room with you inlike other hotels and such that have jacuzzi rooms. It had a fake little gas fireplace and had candles out, an upgrade from the television in the previous one as well as a DVD player.

Personal Impressions: Mount Washington Hotel: Mount Washington II

by deecat

I personally do not feel that other resorts can even compete with Mt. Washington as far as being grand and in delivering pomp on such an immense scale.

When Joseph Stickney (railroad tycoon) conceived the idea of this hotel, he set a new standard for luxury. There were electric lights, an indoor pool, private baths for each room, Tiffany lamps, and elegant chandeliers--this was all unique and extravagant for the times. How sad to know that Joseph Stickney died just one year after his creation opened to the public. Stickney's widow remarried to a prince--Prince Carolyn Aymon de Faucigny-Lucinge. Sadly, he died soon after the marriage! But, the widow continued to run the hotel.

Currently, a consortium of investors owns The Mount Washington Hotel resort. They have certainly updated and renovated the place, making it even more splendid. They brought in the live orchestra for dinner and the authentic prohibition speak-easy lounge called The Cave.

All along the Public Spaces, you are able to read about the history of this great, old hotel and how the Italian Craftsmen were imported (about 1000 +) to build and complete all the work here. It's fascinating.

A personal experience that our family had will give you an idea of the staff and guests at the Mount Washington Hotel.

When we were there, Allan and I wanted to play golf, but our daughter Jill was too young to leave alone for four hours. Thus, we talked to a staff member who suggested leaving her with one of their most loyal and long-time guests--an 80 year-old-woman who had been coming here each year since she was six years old! The woman was quite the swimmer, so she volunteered to take Jill swimming in the indoor pool. They spent several hours enjoying the pool, playing pool volleyball, etc. After the swim and clean up, the two of them enjoyed afternoon tea together!

It's a memory for our family that lingers...Kindness, thoughtfulness, and loyalty. These attributes describe the staff and the guests.

Mount Washington Hotel and Resort: The Ultimate Experience in New Hampshire

by deecat

Now this hotel is, indeed, a grand masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture. It took two years and 250 master craftsmen to complete The Mount Washington Hotel.

The idea was conceived by industrialist Joseph Stickney and was opened in 1902. Since that opening day, it immediately became a favorite summer haunt for poets, princes, presidents, and just everyday people. It's now a National HIstoric Landmark, and today (as throughout its history), the hotel has been renowned for luxurious extras, natural beauty, and unbelievable service.

The decor of the rooms and public spaces reflect the elegance and sophistication of yesteryear. The indoor pools, health spa, and fireplaces are a few of the reasons Mount Washington Hotel remains a place where people return for years and years.

The resort has 27 challenging holes of golf on a course with spectacular views. In addition, there are 12 tennis courts, indoor, outdoor, and river swimming pools, bridle paths for horseback riding, Mountain biking, and hiking on miles of National Forest trails, and, best of all, leisurely carriage rides across the property.

There's also a 4-Diamond Main Dining Room that is opened for dinner with even a serenading orchestra! (There's even a dancefloor!) There's also the Cave Lounge where you can listen to jazz and comtemporary music.

We were absolutely amazed at the genuine kindness and attentiveness of the staff. Our room was beyond beautiful and well equipped yet of another era. Words cannot express how much we loved and remember fondly the wonderful Mount Washington Hotel

LAKES OF THE CLOUDS AMC HUT: TOP OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

by mtncorg

Originally built in 1915 near the foot of Mt Monroe, this hut is the main mountain hut of the AMC - room for 90 guests. Facilities at Pinkham Notch along NH16 are more extensive, but this is the biggest walk-in hut. It is open from mid-June through mid-September. At 5050 feet, this is also the AMC's highest hut in the Presidentials. It is a very popular hut and is reachable only by trail. Reservations are highly recommended for an overnight stay - (603) 466-2727.

This is the highest of the Appalachian Mountain Huts and is among the most popular. The views are spectacular and the atmosphere is as alpine as you can get in the eastern US.

Pilgrim Inn & Cottages: Great location

by Agraichen

The Pilgrim Inn was our "saviour" on night. Technically they were closed for the evening and officially "full" but room was found for us.

Clean, comfortable and very friendly. They stayed open long after closing until we were able to arrive

The Inn has a geat location. Just off of Hwy 93 in Plymouth, NH, it's very centrally located for day trips to most all of NH's attractions most any season of the year.

In the summer it's less than 30 minutes from Lost River, The Flume, Clark's Trained Bears, Newfound Lake, and only 5 minutes from Polar Caves

In the winter skiing is again less than 30 minutes. Bretton Woods, Cannon Mt., Gunstock, Watterville, Valley, Loon, and only 5-10 minutes from Tenney Mt.

Greenleaf Hut: check out a hut if you can....

by richiecdisc

The Appalachian Mountain Club has set up a great system of huts throughout the White Mountains and they are deservedly popular. With great mountain settings and homey rustic atmospheres they are the perfect solution for those wanting to spend more time in the mountains. We did not have time to spend the night in one on this trip but would surely look into it for the next time.

The Greenleaf Hut is in a perfect location for doing the Franconia Ridge Trail. It is a very busy hut and not one to choose if you want solitude. That said, it was very comfy looking and the food smelled great. The prices for food were surprising not bad either. It is not cheap to stay in the nicer huts but meals are included and tough to argue with the location and views. Oh, but you must hike to get to the best of them, like the Greenleaf Hut.

Dry River Campground, Crawford Notch State Park: camping even in the cold can be great....

by richiecdisc

Dry River is a great little campground with only 36 spots so it's best to reserve this if coming on the weekend. The spots are very roomy so you do not feel as if you are on top of your neighbor. We got there kind of late but it was very handy the next day as the rangers office is just up the road and great hikes too. We woke up and saw agreat sunrise on the Frankenstein Cliff that sits right next to the campground.

The spots are well-spaced and there are small pit toilets throughout as well as the very modern toilet/shower facility at the main entrance. It is a very nice campground and a bargain for only $15 a night per tent.

The setting for this hotel is as impressive as the hotel itself. I didn't stay here, but I'm sure it must be at least 4 stars.
