Terrible Hotel!

I am writing about the miserable experience we had yesterday at Wentworth by the Sea. This hotel has the potential to be a world class hotel but falls way short. All aspects of the hotel are mismanaged and The Wentworth is nothing more than a glrofies Holiday Inn with better views. When our busy schedules allow, we enjoy going to the hotel to use the spa, grab lunch or dinner at Latitudes, and use the hotel pool. My wife and I travel quite a bit and when able, we like to stay at our favorite hotel, The Ritz Carlton. When we are visting Portsmouth, we like to frequent The Wentworth. Yesterday was our anniversary, so I booked her a massage at the hotel spa and we headed off to first have lunch at Latitudes. From there we headed poolside as my wife went into the spa to check in for her massage. The following is a list of our complaints regarding our day at the hotel: Latitudes: - Although our waitress was extremely polite, professional, and attentive, we waited about 40 minutes for our appetizers. Especially with two hungry children in tow, this was totally unacceptable. When waiting this long for an order, clients get antsy, angry, and can even start to lose their appetites. - Our entrees took another 20 minutes or so to arrive. Considering the fact that my children and I had burgers and my wife, the king crab leg, again we found this unacceptable. By the time we received our entrees, we were no longer hungry. Poolside: - We then spent the next four hours or so at the hotel pool. Not even once did a waitress come by to see if we needed anything! How can that be? In the caliber of hotel The Wentworth claims to be, how can the pool staff totally ignore its clients? Is this a good way to maximize sales? How do you think it makes guests feel when they are totally ignored and disregarded? Spa: - My wife headed to the spa while we stayed poolside for her scheduled massage. She found herself waiting almost ten minutes just to check in! - When she entered the locker area, the room was filthy with used towels on the floor, the sink and floors all wet, and even discovered a used washcloth hanging in the shower. How disgusting! - Even though the sign clearly states that the use of cell phones is prohibited, while my wife got ready in the locker area, an employee came in chatting on her cell phone for a full ten minutes. How disrupting is this for a client trying to relax? Again, totally unacceptable! - Her massage was also under par. The girl that massaged her yesterday just lacked the expertise and touch that makes for a fine and relaxing massage. All in all, the spa experience yesterday was a total waste of money. - After her massage, my wife headed to the hot tub and the hot tub was not even hot! It was lukewarm. Again, how utterly disappointing! To have all of these incidents happen in a single day is inexcusable. For this caliber of a hotel, the guests should leave feeling good. We left the hotel yesterday totally disappointed with our collective experience. Clients pay good money to go to the hotel and enjoy the rooms, restaurants, spa, and pools and what a shame to have them leave feeling slighted and disgusted. Do yourself a big favor and stay at The Sheraton downtown Portsmouth.

Once Old, Now New

Located in New Hampshire's smallest town on a square mile island, this resort was probably named for Benning Wentworth, the first royal govenor of New Hampshire appointed by King George II. Once Wentworth by the Sea was a grand old lady. There is nothing now to give the feeling of the grand old age. It is a spanking new Marriott with Marriott like fixtures and service.

More about Marriott Wentworth By The Sea

lovely resort

by TripAdvisor Member tymelyron

We spent an evening at Wentworth by the Sea two weeks ago and had an extremely enjoyable visit. The hotel looks like one of the old grand hotels, but it has been completely refurbished and looks new. It is located in a residential waterfront area, very calm and quiet, yet not too far of a driving distance from main highways and Portsmouth. The lobby and dining rooms are lovely, and the food in the tavern was very good. The indoor pool and fitness center appeared to be perfect for relaxation. We stayed in the marina suites, since we needed two bedrooms; the suites, which are a short walk from the main hotel, overlook the bay at the front of the premises, and the view is fantastic, especially from the two decks; the suites have a living room with fireplace, full kitchen, two large bathrooms, and very spacious bedrooms with comfortable beds; the price of the suite was about the same as two rooms in the main hotel, so definitely worth it. An outdoor pool is located directly below the suites, convenient for the warm weather. Would recommend without hesitation.

Beautiful hotel but customer service not so great.

by TripAdvisor Member joy1

Stayed at this hotel from November 11-14, 2004 and had higher expectations especially in terms of customer service according to previous reviews written. This is a beautifully restored hotel. My room was spacious, spotless and tastefully decorated but "underfurnished." However, don't expect the preferential treatment you are accustomed to if you are a Marriott Gold or Platinum member because it doesn't exist. No check-in before 4:00 p.m., no turn-down service offered, no welcome gift, or acknowledgement of your Elite status. The front desk staff is young and pleasant but could use some lessons in providing superior customer service. For example, my requests for a reading lamp, end table and footstool went unfulfilled for 15 hours after check-in. I had contacted the "at your service" line plus the front desk for these requests. There is no system of tracking customer requests to ensure customer satisfication. The customer is the tracking system and after 4 requests, I finally received a floor lamp but was told no end table or footstools were available. The dining room is lovely but very overpriced for the portions received. Bottom line: I had a great rate so probably got my money's worth. However, some folks were paying top dollar for their accommodations and expecting 4-star service. This doesn't hit the mark. I'd stay here again for a "great rate" but it is not worth anything more, especially if you are expecting the "Marriott touch" as an elite member of its rewards program.

Very nice hotel and tastefully decorated: Nice Experience but Service Lacking

by TripAdvisor Member nicolas617

I just got back from a one day escape at the Wentworth. It really is a nice place and very tastefully decorated. I got a good rate for a King Suite which included a gas fireplace in a mini sitting room, 2 bathrooms, and bedroom. The suite was VERY tastefully decorated and had many nice windows throughout. It was very pleasant and exactly what I needed for a small break. The suite was definitely on the smallish side and the lay-out with two narrow but long bathrooms was not ideal, but fine for one day. I got a Sunday night rate of 199 which came to $214 with tax. For this rate, I would say the room was worth it. The standard rooms are quite small. The staff was inexperienced to border-line rude. They definitely did NOT go out of their way to make it a nice trip. The SPA is nice but it seem as if they could include the steam room and locker room to hotel guests. The breakfast buffet is nice and quite reasonably priced.

Grand old building with service to match

I travel extensively and try to find out of the ordinary, interesting places to stay. I must say that I found both at the Wentworth by the Sea. I stayed Dec 22-26 and had a magical experience. The old grand lady has been beautifully restored to better than original condition. The charm and elegance were present along with the high quality modern conveniences discriminating travlelers enjoy. The food was artfully prepared and included unusual and interesting ingredients that set it apart from the run of the mill high end hotel restaurant menus. The staff were young and full of enthusiasm, going out of their way to make my stay truly memorable. I would rate this as one of the most enjoyable holidays I can remember and will definitely make it an annual tradition.

A picture book, AWESOME weekend!!!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

We just spent a weekend at this Marvelous hotel. Last minute trip. Last minute great deal too. Marriott Rewards really rewarded us this time. Room upgrade. Room 351, at the end of the hall, room location is exceptional. Meaning, the room is accross the end of the building, not sideways. Own balcony.. And the snowstorm even made it better. BEAUTIFUL.. Outside whirlpool/jacuzzi, indoor pool, and whirlpool. Room service..... Great French Onion Soup. Great food at the Fitzgerald's Pub. Great Breakfast buffet. Rewards members are treated like ROYALTY. No late checkout.. So what...!!! The hotel is so busy and the housekeeping people have to get the rooms ready for the next guest to enjoy the stay to the MAX///
One advice book the spa ahead of time, they are busy and buzzing...

Beware of the sheets!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

We were so excited when we drove up the driveway at 2 PM on Feb 12, 2005.The sun was shining down and the hotel was just glistening. Imagine our surprise when told they would not give us a room until 4 PM. "4 Pm is the checkin time" No offer to use the facilites or a changing room. There was only one robe in the rather small room. No ironing board. There was an iron. I had to iron my clothes on the floor. The coffee pot did not work. and then there were the sheets. I can only guess they got starched. I actually had red marks on my body from where my skin touched the sheets. I do not have sensitive skin and have slept in hotels around the world and have never had this problem. I was up most of the night putting lotion on the sore spots and trying to put towels between me and the sheets. When we told the front desk staff the next day, they just seemed to laugh it off and said maybe next time things would be better. What next time?

A great getaway!

by TripAdvisor Member amycd

My husband and I stayed here 2/19/05-2/21/05 with our 1 year old daughter. We were somewhat nervous b/c some of the reviews were stating it was not a "family-friendly" hotel----we found that not to be true at all. The staff were very accomodating to us in the restaurants and at the front desk. We got an early check in---1pm. We found the staff to be very friendly everywhere. We stayed in a suite---which was very nice and had plenty of everything, including space for our baby to walk/crawl around. Beds were comfortable and the room was immaculate. The spa was nice and the seaweed body tx is excellent. We used the gym and the pool and had a really nice time. The food at every meal was delicious---although somewhat pricey. We also went to the Sunday Jazz Brunch---it was nice, but breakfast in the main restaurant would probably have been just as good and cost much less ($30. per person plus tip and tax for the brunch). Anyway--we really enjoyed our stay and I consider us to be picky travellers.

Customer service slipping

by A TripAdvisor Member

We were among the very first to visit Wentworth By The Sea and enjoy a cocktail on the porch as the hotel was opening its doors to the public for the first time last year. Building supplies & cranes were in plain view, but the staff was accomodating, helpful and hospitable. We are disappointed to discover that is not so much the case in Feb. 2005. The front desk staff is visibly polite, but less than genuinely interested in accomodating the requests of guests. There appears to be an attitude of "You're just lucky you got a room here."
Example: In November 2004 we made reservations for Feb. 2005, stipulating a room w/ some sort of bubble or air tub for a special occasion. (By the way, Mariott reservation people are NOT at the Wentworth, but at an out-of-state location. They have only a general idea of the Wentworth schematic as far as where rooms are located. If you call the Wentworth front desk to make a room reservation, they transfer you out-of-state.)Over the phone they indicated that only suites have special tubs and made it clear that not all suites do. Fair enough. With three months lead time we stressed the importance of reserving a room w/ such a tub. In Feb., two days prior to our departure, we called the 800 reservation number to verify our tub request and were told specific rooms could not be reserved at Mariott locations as a matter of company policy. Upon registering we were given a suite, with two showers, but NO TUB. After relating all of the above to the front desk and registering our displeasure, we were told we could have a room w/ a tub for one night, but we would have to move to another room for our second night's stay. We rejected this insulting offer, and stayed in the suite w/ two showers. The staff made no offer of reconciliation for our disappointment by offering a bottle of wine or a complimentary breakfast. Had they, I might not be posting this review. Unfortunately, the entire Wentworth experience was troubling, and left us feeling unappreciated for our business and slighted by the Mariott Corp.
We suggest Mariott reconsider their policy of refusing customers the opportunity to choose what they are buying, as opposed to swiping customer credit cards and insisting they take what they are given.
