Skiing - based in North Conway

by phil_and_den

Hi - We are coming to North Conway in January for a skiing holiday. In the past we have skied in Europe and have stayed in one resort, so have had to purchase only one ski lift pass. However, this time we will have a hire car and are aware there are several ski resorts within an hour's drive of North Conway. What would be the most econmocial option re ski lift passes so we could enjoy the most of this area?

Also what other activities (sightseeing) would you recommend in January (I'm afraid the famous train is not operational @ this time)? Many thanks, P & D

I'm not sure you will be able to buy a multi-area pass in N. Conway. You may want to check out Attitash's web site since they are owned by the same company that owns Sunday River and Sugarloaf . From Conway you can ski, Attitash, Bretton Woods, Wildcat, Black Mt., Cranmore and even Sunday River in ME.

I would recommend checking out the Mt Washington Hotel for dinner or just drinks one afternoon. Its an old Victorian era destination hotel near Bretton Woods that has tons of character and history. I would also head to Jackson. Here’s their site:

One last place: If you are into hiking or mountaineering, stop in to the Peter Limmer boot factory in Jackson. Limmer boots are the best hand made leather mountaineering boot made in the world. Many of his boots have scaled Everest, K2 etc. He makes them special order to your exact foot shape(4 year wait!!) or standard sizes can be purchased off the shelf. My father has had a pair of Limmers for 35 years. Been resoled twice but are still kicking!

Travel Tips for North Conway

Tuckerman's Ravine

by goingsolo

This was supposed to be a shortcut and an easier way down. But the entire mountain is covered in those dreaded rocks. I know this is the granite state, but is it too much to ask for to find a dirt trail?

Again, I am kidding. This little segue lead to a cool area within the ravine and past a steep slope where, I'm told, people ski in the winter.

Black Mountain Ski Area

by KaiM

A jewel located in Jackson (Rt. 16B), about 10 minutes north of North Conway. Cheaper and better than Cranmore Ski Area directly in North Conway. 4 lifts and 40 trails. Half day adult tickets for $23 and full day tickets for $32. Some pretty tough, narrow and twisting black diamond trails. But also nice beginner terrain. I had a great time at Black Mountain. Kancamagus Highway 1

by Krumlovgirl

" Kancamagus Highway "

The highway is about 34 miles in length and starts just a couple of miles from Conway. It ends in the town of Lincoln, a touristy area with many restaurants, hotels, and condos on the water. Along the way you get some spectacular scenery of the mountains, the Kancamagus Pass, and the valleys below. There are quite a few places to stop and take pictures and most of the stops have little plaques explaining the history of the area or the geographical significance.

Most of my photos come from stopping on the side of the road and getting out with my three (phone, 35 mm, digital) cameras. Some, however, were actually taken FROM the car as I was driving. I do not suggest this. ;-)
