Black flies

by marionD

What time of year do the black flies arrive in North Conway? If they have already arrived, how bad are they?

May-June is usually the worst of it but they are around all summer. I was in North Conway 2 weeks ago and was also near the NH-Maine border last weekend was surprised to find the bugs weren't too bad this year - at least so far. I've heard this may be due to the warm weather we had this past December which may have caused the generation that was due to hatch this spring to hatch in Dec. instead. When it got suddenly cold again many of the annoying little critters may have died off before they were able to reproduce. That's the theory anyway. Regardless, you will need bug spray. It's just that they are tolerable rather than completely maddening so far this year.

I always bring an empty fold up bag to put my items I bought while shopping. And North Conway is a place to go shopping folks! Extra sweat shirts and jacket in the Fall or Winter. Layering is the way to keep warm & if you get hot you can remove a layer.
Also extra gloves incase one pair gets wet. Mosquito Repellent in the Spring & Summer. They are AWFUL in New Hampshire. Many lakes & ponds for them the thrive in! I always bring my battery charger & an extra memory card & battery. If you're a camper or hiking ... you know what to bring. If not ... check out the many website for the list of items to birng. Extra money & my credit card .... hahaha, don't leave home without it!

The city is a place for all four season and offers activities for everybody. Hiking, climbing and site seeing in the summer. Skiing, Snowboarding, sleding, ice skating, snowmobile riding and other things during the winter. And SHOPPING all year round. I´ve rarely seen a city with more outlet stores than North Conway. A great place to spend some money for cheap brand-name clothes. The area is also well-known for its historic covered bridges.
