Photos in & around Portsmouth?

by rmdw

I'm getting excited about the VT mtg in Portsmouth in September. So I did some searching and found some photos: http://www.chesterfieldoutdoors.com/reflections/summer1.htm

Maybe others can offer other photos and suggestions of what all we can do there (besides the drinkin' & eatin'!!!)

Definitely cruise Rt 1B to Rt 1A along the coast, through New Castle, by Wentworth-by-the-Sea, through Rye and down to Hampton. BEAUTIFUL drive! Stop at Odiorne Point State Park along the way.

Take a cruise to the Isles of Shoals - or go a whale watch. Always fun!

Tour Strawberry Banke - a living museum, and Prescott Park, right across the street.

Take a trip up to LL Bean in Freeport, Maine!

The options are endless. . . Enjoy!

Hi Robert! I have lots of ideas of things to do. It just depends on how much time you have. The great thing about Portsmouth is that it's really close to Boston as well as to coastal Maine. If I had my way I'd take a day and go up to Portland, Maine. I love it there. If you want to stay in Portsmouth I would definately suggest taking a harbor tour (which we are doing as part of the meeting) or going to the Strawberry Banke Museum. Also very nearby is Hampton Beach in New Hampshire. You could also rent the film "The Weight of Water" with Sean Penn, some of it was filmed in Portsmouth and it will give you a good feel for the area--even though it is a historical picture.

Did you know that Portland, Oregon got that name over Boston, Oregon on the outcome of a coin toss?

I've quickly driven through "your" Portland but never really explored it. Maybe in September!

Our Portland is much smaller, but very nice. All of coastal Maine is beautiful.

The WARNER HOUSE is perhaps the finest example of a brick urban mansion of the early 18th century in New England. Located on the corner of Daniel and Chapel Streets in Portsmouth.

The waterfront
The waterfront is the best part for me. The water is actually the Piscataqua River (there I said it, Piscataqua :)

The area is a great place for a stroll with several restaurants and art shops. The whole town is not that big so you can park somewhere in the center and walk around.

If you can not find street parking you can try and drive north to the waterfront on State street and make a left at the end after you cross under the bridge there is an underground public parking lot.  (The lot is adjacent to Dunfey's my favorite restaurant in town where you have to try the mussels!)

THE ALDRICH HOUSE - built c. 1797

by LoriPori

Thomas Bailey Aldrich was born in 1830 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Aldrich attained the friendship of such notables as Mark Twain and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
He became editor of the Atlantic Monthly, the most important literary magazine of the time.
In 1979, the ALDRICH HOUSE, built c. 1797 became part of the Strawberry Banke Museum.

old graveyard

by chaistarr

I pondered upon this graveyard, where a signer of the US constitition was buried among other people not as famous. I thought it was neat to see such old graves (1700s- 1900s). many were cracked in half, leaning, so I felt sorry for the gravestones if that makes sense.

ISLES OF SHOALS

by LoriPori

A group of nine small islands, the ISLES OF SHOALS is situated approximately 16 k.m. from the east coast, between New Hampshire and Maine.
Some of the islands were used for fishing camps by native Americans and first settled by Europeans in the early 1600's.
The islands include - Appledore Island (the largest island at 95 acres), Star Island (46 acres), Smuttynose (25 acres), Malaga Island, White Island, Duck Island and Cedar Island.
The narrator on our Isles of Shoals cruise, told us of many stories about these Islands,
