Traveling from Portsmouth, NH to Ogunquit, ME

by alek

Can anybody tell me how can I get from Portsmouth, NH to Ogunquit, ME? From what I've found on net, and that is nothing, I think my only option is taxi. If that is so, how much would it cost? I can see it's some 20 miles ride..

Have you heard the expression, you can't get there from here? That's it from Portland to Ogunquit. I tried bus and train, even going into Boston to Ogunquit and came up nothing. It really isn't that far but there appears to be no public transportation. If you want to pursue the cab call a cab company in the area and ask the price. That would be better than a guess. The cab is crossing a state line and it might affect the fare.

Here's an out-of-the-box idea: Post a message here: http://nh.craigslist.org/rid

To see if you can arrange a ride that way.

Besides Craigslist, which is a great idea, you might want to check local college/university boards that offer/want rides from place to place. I think it would depend on when you are making the trip. Long weekends and holidays are the best times to try to find a ride. And it doesn't have to be exact either...Portsmouth to Ogunquit...it could be a driver driving from Boston to Bangor, driving on 95N who could pick you up and drop you off.

Good luck!

ok thanx to you all!
i've called couple taxi companies in portsmouth and got the tariff (around 50$). so i think that since my start point is actually new york, its better if i just go to boston and then take amtrak service to wells ME which is some 5 miles above ogunquit. that way is less expensive, takes almost the same time and plus i'll have chance to visit some friends in boston :)
cheers!

Travel Tips for Portsmouth

Parking

by cjg1

I have been lucky to grab a parking spot on the street and I have parked in one of the many municipal garages. Finding a spot on the street is not always easy and requires you to feed the meter to avoid a ticket. The municipal garage provides a guaranteed space and a relatively hassle free visit without worrying about feeding a meter.

The High-Hanover Parking Garage is located close to Market Square so the location is good. The aprking rate is 75 cents an hour which is not bad. The Garage is located right on Hanover street and has several levels of parking.

historic homes

I like how old it is! Homes here have been built from 1600's to present time.

usually, the older the home, the smaller the window panes.

I liked the colors in this neighborhood of homes. this is an old neighborhood on a hill overlooking the harbor. (on Deer. Street.)

A Great Town To Bar Hop

by cjg1

Portsmouth has some great bars and restaurants throughout the town. Since the town is very walkable it is a great spot to bar hop. Liz and I enjoy hopping from place to place sampling some drinks and appetizers while enjoying the town.

REUBEN SHAPLEY HOUSE - Built c. 1813

by LoriPori

Standing at the southeast corner of Court and Atkinson Streets, (420 Court) is the REUBEN SHAPLEY HOUSE. Captain Shapley, a successful merchant and sea captain, bought this corner property in 1790. It began its existence as a workshop or store. The building's simple Federal styling indicated that its conversion to living quarters took place while Reuben Shapley owned it. The change to a dwelling house with its chimneys. attractive mantelpieces and other domestic trims, was completed by 1813. The house remained part of the Shapley estate until 1831.
It is presently used as the administrative office by the Strawberry Banke Museum.

PORTSMOUTH HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE

by LoriPori

Part of the Fort Constitution historic site, the PORTSMOUTH HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE is adjacent to the Coast Guard Station. The lighthouse could be seen from our Isles of Shoals cruise and is one of only two lighthouses in New Hampshire.
The station was established in 1771. The present lighthouse was built in 1878 of cast-iron and reaching a height of 48 feet. It was automated in 1960.
