More about Fairthorne Bed and Breakfast
Can't Wait to Return
This was our 2nd trip to the Fairthorne and it was better than the 1st. Ed and Diane make a great breakfast and will treat you like family. The room we had (Julia’s) was just right, with great linens and the whirlpool tub was perfect combined with the in room fireplace. We recommend that you choose a room that has on-site parking.
This was our first time at any B&B so we were a little unsure of what to expect or if we would be comfortable but our stay at the Fairthorne made us feel right at home. The room was beautiful and spacious. Everything about it was just right. The location of was within walking distance of the beach, shopping, and eateries. We look forward to our next visit to the Fairthorne.

Loved the place and the innkeepers
We booked at the last minute after a disappointing few days in Delaware when we decided to cut our stay short and take the ferry over to Cape May. On our arrival we were shown to a lovely room with our own fireplace and his and her bathrooms. In fact after a late lunch, we decided to stay in the room for the rest of the evening. Breakfast the following morning was great (breakfast burrito, fresh fruit and orange juice, great coffee). We wished we could have stayed for another few days. Would not hesitate to return. It was also nice to see that some other couples were repeat visitors.
Number one so far on our list of B & B's.
The Fairthorne is a lovely and elegant Bed & Breakfast located in the heart of beautiful Cape May New Jersey. The beach, shopping, and first rate dining are all within walking distance.
The Fairthorne’s richly appointed rooms brings one back to a simpler yet more elegant time. Somehow the hosts, Ed and Diane Hutchison flawlessly mix modern luxuries like whirlpool tubs and DVD players with the beauty and splendor of the Victorian era. The room in which we stayed was cozy yet not confining.
The breakfasts are ‘five star’ with touches like homemade cranberry muffins, eggs Benedict, and coffee that is perhaps the best in NJ.
From the luxurious robes and linens in the rooms to the cream sherry filled decanters in the sitting rooms nothing is overlooked by the hosts and the staff of the Fairthorne.
Ushered in Spring at the Fairthorne
Fairthorne Bed and Breakfast It was our first stay at a B&B. The place was very lovely. The inn keepers were friendly and accomodating. We felt like we were visiting a relative there. Our room was beautiful, cozy and also immaculate. The breakfast was fabulous. It was a pleasant experience that I'm sure we will repeat again. Lorraine and Al
I would like to share my experience while visiting the Fairthorne. This was our first stay at the Fairthorne. The Fairthorne leaves no stone unturned. Well designed, immaculate, esquisite linens that would even make Martha Stewart flip the tag to see the designer! Convenient on site parking, centrally located to restaurants and shops.
I was lucky enough to have the owner, Diane, give me a mini tour of the momentarily vacant rooms. I decided at that very moment to take on the role of Goldilocks and instead of frequenting B & B's street by street, I would sample every room at the Fairthorne.
Sometimes breakfast at inns are a little uncomfortable. Eating with strangers, trying to make polite conversation. NOT so here! Not only were the sit down breakfasts elegantly presented and delicious, but I wondered what magic potion was in the hot syrup as I poured it over the crispy tender belgium waffles. For at the breakfast table were 12 wonderful people. Friendly and curious of each other. At times I caught a glimpse of the staff peeking around the corner thinking to themselves, it's been almost 2 hours! What is that? Laughter? Conversation? Still eating? The answer to all is YES! What was it that made me feel that I wanted to get the address of everyone to keep in touch? From the young parents who escaped for a one night get-away from raising their children to the tales of becoming grandparents, to the stories of tails wagging and hair filled rooms from loving pets to stories of re-modeling and falling plaster to stories of an impending wedding and empty nesters. All were generally interested and we all stilled to listen to each other.
To the owners, Diane and Ed, congratulations! You excell as innkeepers!
Unlike Don Henley's infamous "Hotel California" you CAN leave the Fairthorne, you just don't want to.
My wife and I have been making a stay at the Fairthorne an annual event since first coming here many years ago. The inn and the rooms are always well kept. There is a nice selection of rooms to choose from, each offering something slightly different.
Our personal favorite is the Emma-Kate room, which features a separate sitting room with fireplace, and a large bathroom with a large shower. We love to spend a few days right before the holidays when the town is in the process of decorating and the weather is not yet too harsh. we find it gives us a little time to pause before the big holiday stress kicks in. Most times we are the only two people on the beach. Also, there is an unlimited list of restaurants to choose from, even at that time of year.
The inn itself invites us to come and go as we please. The only contact with others, if we choose, is at breakfast, at which we always find very interesting and cordial couples. Of course if you would like to find either Diane or Ed for any needs or for conversation, they have always been there for us.
As I implied, we look foward to our "08 visit.

The Fairthorne Stole Our Hearts
We were booking our stay for Cape May's Sherlock Holmes Weekend with the Cape May MAC. Our usual venue for this event is Congress Hall. For some reason, Congress Hall was not available; and the only listed accommodations that offered the super deluxe accomodations package was the Fairthorne. We booked through the MAC, hoping for the best.
When we arrived for our weekend, we were warmly greeted by our host and hostess, Ed and Dianne, who was starting to prepare for the soon-to-be-served tea and the next day's breakfast.
The bed was most comfortable, and the room was very well-maintained. The sitting and dining areas were sumptuous and everything was done like clockwork. No tiny detail was omitted. Ed and Dianne went out of their way to make sure that we were comfortable.
The tea was sumptuous. The breakfasts were of a gourmet quality, and would have cost a considerable amount if served at a restaurant. These were part of the package. Conversations with fellow travelers were jovial and congenial. The help was most cooperative and sensitive to the guests' wishes. In addition, we got to know one of the major characters in the Sherlock Holmes weekends, Jack Favourite, who has played toe role of Dr. Watson for many years; and who is an avowed "regular" at the Fairthorne. It was more like a family reunion than a place to stay, as Ed and Dianne treated all of their guests like close family.
Each Bed and Breakfast is unique onto itself, but there is a definite difference in quality between a B & B where the owners are the inkeepers vs. hired inkeepers. The owners put more care into the comfort of their guests. Ed and Dianne made certain that everything possible was done for the guests at the Fairthorne.
We usually make the Sherlock Holmes Weekends every year, and we will be sure to book future stays at the Fairthorne.

Comfy & Cozy
Even though the weather was not so great (rainy & windy) the Fairthorne held true to its name and we still had more than a fair time! The Julia room was just as pretty and clean as the picture!!! We really enjoyed the comforts of home away from home!!! Ed and Diane are both so charming and the Fairthorne is perfectly located! Everything is truly within walking distance(even in the rain). Great place, great time hopefully we can return and also get great weather!
a great getaway
The Fairthorne is a cozy and romantic Inn located in the middle of the historic district of Cape May, NJ. Ed gave us a very good dinner recommendation at our arrival. We found our room to be clean and well decorated. In the morning we were treated to a delicious breakfast of eggs benedict, fresh fruit and pistachio muffins. We have stayed at other historic Inns of Cape May, but, the Fairthorne is our new favorite.
