Exquisite Rooms ~ One Block to Beach

One of the fabulous things about Cape May is its wealth of Victorian Bed & Breakfast Inns, each one more beautiful than the one before it. The John F. Craig House is a Carpenter Gothic Victorian charmer with 7 exquisite guestrooms and 1 suite. Built in 1866, it was expanded when the owners moved another house on Lafayette St. built in the 1850's and attached it to the Craig House making it a perfect size for a B&B. The house has wonderful open porches for the summer and glassed-in porches for the fall and winter. For Victoriana lovers (OK, for us women) you'll enjoy the inn's collection of old toys, trains, majolica, and the like.

The guestrooms are all furnished with either Eastlake and Renaissance Revival antiques, has quality bedding and each room has a private bath, cable TV with VCR, coffeemakers, apt.-size refrigerators, hairdryers and air-conditioning. Some rooms even have fireplaces!! Each room has been given its own name for a personalized touch. The John F. Craig House is one block from the beach and to shopping and restaurants due to its great location.

Unique Quality: I particularly like the fact that not only is breakfast which can be taken in the dining room or on the porch as you wish. In addition, Included with the price of the room are afternoon snacks/refreshments served about 5pm. If that wasn't enough, beach towels, beach chairs, an outdoor shower, and bicycles are provided free of charge to guests. How fantastic is that!?! (Don't forget to purchase a beach tag before you hit the beach!See earlier tips.) This B&B also has a small library nook with private internet access for all you VT'rs that can't wait to e-mail or access your VT pages. And last but not least, free off-site parking is also included in your rate.

This B & B is not the place for frugal travelers but if you don't mind splurging, this is a fantastic place! Check their website for current rates, specials and cancellation policies. **Note** Only children over the age of 12 are welcome. Sorry, but not pets! You can understand why this policy is in force.

Gary and Kathy Pisarek's wedding at the John Craig House

by A TripAdvisor Member

What a wonderful place to have a wedding. Barbara had the house decorated beautifully and was the perfect hostess. We plan to visit every anniversary and during the summer months as well. The house takes you back in time and was perfect for our wedding. The food was phenomonal. Try it, you will come to love it as we have.

A Wonderful Stay for me, my wife, and the little one on the way!

We were almost scared away by a negative review, but we were determined to meet Chip and Barbara (because of all the positive reviews), and we are so glad we did! We've been to many B&Bs, and this one was one of our favorites! The Martha Edna on the third floor was a wonderfully cozy room and the bed was very comfortable. The room was ultra clean and the morning breakfasts were a delight. Barbara was very hospitable and accommodating. We had a nice conversation with her about our expecting child and her experiences. (Thank you for your advice) We also had nice conversations with other guests over breakfast.

The location is awesome, as the beach and many many good restaurants are nearby. We decided to walk everywhere - to the beach, the shops, to the lighthouse (about 2 miles), and to the Pier House (a very nice dining experience). We went during the "low" season, so it was nice and quiet. We hope to return one day.

Look No More!!!

My girlfriend and I wanted to have a fun, relaxing weekend where we could be near the beach, shops and restaurants. We decided on Cape May, NJ and heard great things about the John F. Craig House. The B&B was AMAZING and the rooms were incredibly comfortable with wonderful décor. Barbara and Chip were wonderful hosts and were very helpful in making restaurant recommendations. They also told us about ideal places to go to while in town. The location was perfect where we had the choice of many restaurants all within walking distance. We had a great night’s sleep and heard no other noises in the house. The breakfast was EXCELLENT and I took seconds. Needless to say, I wasn’t hungry the rest of the day. This B&B is a true gem and I have already been recommending it to my family and friends. If you are looking to have a wonderful stay, look no more, the John F. Graig house is a sure thing.

P.S. You must try the “Barabara Sangria” made in the afternoon.

Very Nice!!

My 2 sisters and I just got back from the John F. Craig House B&B, and it was awesome! We had been at Cape May Point for a retreat and were able to stay an extra night at this B&B. Barbara was away visiting, but Chip was a wonderful host. We were there during the week, and during the “off” season, so it was just us and 2 other couples. We loved the laid back atmosphere, and Chip let us use the house as our “home base” after check-out, which allowed us to enjoy Cape May all day before we headed home.

We stayed in room 7, which accommodated 3 adults very comfortably. Each room has a private bath, a refrigerator, and coffee pot. On the main level of the house, there was also a well stocked guest pantry with an ice maker, snack, drinks, etc. Of the three of us, 2 had never stayed at a B&B before, but can’t imagine any being nicer!

We loved the casual snack at 5:00 p.m., and breakfast was wonderful. Chip was very helpful in assisting us find things to do in the area.

The location of this B&B is convenient to everything in town. We had “elegant” Tea at one of the local tea rooms, took 2 trolley tours of the area, visited the day spa for a stone massages, rode bikes (supplied by the B&B) to the beach, and much more.

We left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated! We will be back!!!

Awesome location

The John F. Craig house was great. The room was very clean, comfortable, and cozy. All rooms have private baths!!! The room has a small refrigerator to keep sodas, beer, etc.. Air conditioning, coffee maker, cable TV w/ HBO. The house itself is beautiful and centrally located. Restaurants and shops are right around the corner, and the beach is 2 blocks away. Nice porch to sit and relax.

The owner, Barbara, was very pleasant and helpful. The breakfasts were great, and there was always plenty for 2nds...or 3rds, lol. Afternoon drinks and snacks was a relaxing treat before heading out for the evening. The common kitchen has snacks and drinks (sodas) available 24 hours a day, for free. Nice to see someone not nickle and diming you to death, lol.

You can't go wrong with the John F. Craig house.

Exceeded all our expectations!

We just returned from our vacation in Cape May the other week. This was our first time staying at a Bed and Breakfast at the shore. We were a little worried picking a place sight unseen but the John F. Craig House turned out to be everything they claimed it was on their website!!

During our stay, we had the opportunity to be in two different rooms. Both rooms were so beautiful, clean, and most of all comfortable. It was hard to get out of bed in the morning but who wants to miss breakfast there. We certainly didnt!!

My favorite breakfast was the orange french toast with orange butter. It was to die for!! The carrot muffins were also delicious. The problem with breakfast is you don't want to stop eating. You could sit on the sunny porch or eat in the dining room. It was up to you. My husband really enjoyed the cookie jar in the guest pantry. The homemade cookies were also wonderful.

At the 5:00 PM "Tea-Time", all the guests gathered on the porch as we had refreshments and chatted. It was alot of fun and we met some really nice people. The horse and carriages paraded past us setting the pace for the evening. Slow and relaxing!!

The beach, shopping, and restaurants were all in walking distance. We never needed our car. Barbara & Chip were wonderful innkeepers. Barbara reviewed many of the local restaurants and menu's during our refreshments. This was extremely helpful given the number of restaurants to choose from.

It was so enjoyable, we are planning a return trip this year.

An Unexpected Delight

by TripAdvisor Member JackTheDuckMan

Twenty years ago my husband Budd and I visited Cape May, the town where in the 1940s I had vacationed as a child. Over these past twenty years we have returned again and again, staying in many "bed and breakfasts," some good and some not so good. Our last two visits, which happened to be recent, were to the John F. Craig House. For tired, "strung out" New Yorkers looking for a little quiet, the inn was an unexpected delight. Both times we stayed in the "Ford Room," a sweet and quiet place where the patterns of the afternoon sun on the walls made me want to listen to Debussy.

The John F. Craig House is very pretty, its breakfasts delicious and its owners, Chip and Barbara, gracious. It is also clear to us that they love Cape May. In our experience, we have noticed that those inns where guests become acquainted with each other are those in which the owners themselves are welcoming and friendly. A glance at the porch of the John F. Craig House at "refreshment time" says it all.

We will definitely return for a longer stay!

by TripAdvisor Member Key_West_Blondie

We stayed at the John F. Craig House for one night following our wedding in Cape May. We booked a room fairly last minute after reading the rave reviews it received on this web site. We are so happy that we did!!!!! Bill and Nadine were our hosts during our stay and they were delightful! They made us feel right at home. We were eager to try Barbara's Sangria in the afternoon and it was truly amazing! Our suite on the 3rd floor was very roomy and decorated so nicely. We were sorry to leave and can't wait to return!!!!!! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
