More about La Mer Beachfront Inn Cape May

Loved La Mer

by TripAdvisor Member janyFairLawnNJ

I had the pleasure of staying here on a cold and wintry weekend in December. I purposely came down for the Annual Craft Show for a girls weekend with my daughter. We loved this hotel. Everything was brand new and clean. (Some of the plaster was still damp!) The location is great, in a quiet area and across from the beach. Employees are very accommodating and friendly. Our room was well-appointed and had an incredible view. We had breakfast in the on-site restaurant, and, I initially thought it was on the pricy side, but the portions are very generous and that meal carried us all day to dinner. I will definitely return again in warm weather to enjoy the beach and pool.

Great for Families

by TripAdvisor Member ohara1979

We brought our 10 and 13 year old children for a long weekend and this is a great family hotel! I am sure that some of the other "more elegant" places are better for a romantic getaway or business trip. However, with picky kids, this was a hit. We had a very large room (not a direct ocean view but we could see it from the balcony) and the built in kitchen with nearly full size refrigerator and microwave, granite countertops and stocked with dishes for 4 was a hit. The bedroom area with two queens was larger than most and the tvs have been updated.

If you are travelling with children, I think you will be very happy here. The pool was not open yet but it looked nice and the fitness room can easily compete with the better ones in larger chain hotels - very nice. Rooms are renovated and very clean.

There did seem to be a lack of staff, particularly at the front desk but it is the off season and this really didn't cause us any problems. We were able to get extra pillows, etc. without a headache but if you are really into top service or have special needs, this could be an issue. Also, if you are in Cape May for a "couples" weekend or more romantic celebration, there are many very upscale "boutique" type inns that you would enjoy more. But if you are with the whole gang for swimming, eating, playing and need room to spread out, this is the place!

great stay

A beautiful place and super location. The room was large with oceanfront view. Very clean and had a wonderful pool. Parking was ample and a mile walk to the town center so it was far enough away from the hustle and bustle. Will definately stay there again.

Excellent location and hotel

by TripAdvisor Member vtsi04

Excellent hotel & location. Went this past weekend (June 16-18) with my husband and 2 year old son. I had reserved one of the larger type rooms with 2 queen beds, living room area and kitchenette. It was oceanview, with a large balcony (4 chairs and small table) that overlooked the beach across the street. It was very, very, clean, and very nice. All appliances in the kitchenette area (apt size refridge, sink, 2 burner stove, microwave) was very clean and in perfect, like new, condition. Dishes, pots, glasses, etc are supplied with this type of room. Nice little coffee maker.
The room was deep and had a much larger than expected living room area set apart from the bedroom section by a halfwall. We didn't need it, but I think that the couch was a pullout. You could definitely stay here for a week. We didn't use it but they had a guest laundry available. Also, the pool area was beautiful, nice size with a small children's section of the pool fenced off within the larger pool. Nice looking chaise lounges available.
The beach area across the street, as others have mentioned, is the quiet part of the beach. No services available, but with your hotel right across the street, you don't really need them. We loved the quietness of this part of the beach. Some couples, alot of families, nice atmosphere. And tons of dolphins frolicking in the surf right off the beach - fantastic!
I highly recommend this hotel for families or couples. Also, they have a wonderful restaurant attached to the hotel, The Pier House. My husband and I enjoyed a great meal (not inexpensive but worth it) for dinner. My son had fallen asleep on the way to dinner and slept through in his stroller. We also had breakfast here on the patio both days, again, not inexpensive but delicious. They have nice, college age, type servers that try hard and are very pleasant. You can also have lunch here, or drinks if you wish. There was a large group having drinks on Saturday night on the patio, we heard them when the sliding door to the balcony was open, but they weren't overly loud and we heard nothing once we closed the slider. For the busy section of town, you need only walk or drive abt 1/4 mile down Beach Ave and there are many stores and other restaurants.
If you want a hotel instead of one of the inns, this place may be for you. Highly recommended.

Nice, but could be more Family Friendly

by A TripAdvisor Member

This is such a nice property that has alot going for it, location, nice rooms, but it's the people that make your expereince memorable. We stayed in a room that was a corner suite, would have been nice to have been informed upon reservation that the view was partially comprised by the top of the restuarant ajacent to the hotel. ($299.00 a night). We had a partial view of beach, but did not like the view of the vents on top of the restuarant. The room was clean and ample for our family of four. The place would be tops if the front desk staff, especially Kevin give the same level of service and attention to all guests at the property. If you are 50+ with no children he goes out of his way to assist you. Upon check-in he points out the room on the hotel map, ice -machine accessability and tells them about towels for use at the hotel pool. Upon our check-in, we were given the room key and pointed towards the evalator. Hurried us along. Giving him another chance to come through for us, he basically discouraged us from using the hotel restuarant, saying it was not a place for shorts/t-shirts even though my husband's attire was a button down shirt and slacks. We wanted recommendations for family dinning, our children are ages 2 and 4, well behaved I might add. Kevin's recommendations were questionable, after looking them up in the Cape May Restuarant directory in our room, one was a bar with a picture of adults doing shots, not much confidence in his recommendations and certainly not my choice for family dining. On one other occasion I asked Kevin about parasailing, he told me to look on the brouchure rack in the lobby, he was very short with me, this upon just having wittnessed him assist a 50+ something couple with tour information on Cape May. They say that people may the experience and in our case Kevin's lack of equal treatment and downright indifference to us is not something that goes unnoticed. On the flip side the maintaince/grounds worker did assist us in providing a good restuarant recommendation.

Fantastic Family Hotel

I recently travelled to Cape May for the first time with my two children (ages 8 & 4) and friends with two children (ages 5 & 2). We had a large efficiency and a small efficiency overlooking the ocean. The rooms were large and exceptionally clean. The kitchen's contained a large fridge, microwave and small cooktop. Perfect for light meals. It was nice to have two TV's - one even had a DVD player.

The pool was also child friendly. It contained a 1 foot deep area that was gated so small children can play. Definite bonus. Just a walk across the street to get to the beach. There is the Pier House restaurant next door. They do not allow you to charge food and drinks to your room. But they do come around the pool taking orders, which was convenient.

One thing the hotel failed to tell us is that there is a $4 charge per adult for beach access daily. In my opinion, the hotel should provide the beach tags as part of the room.

The hotel is away from the stores and restaurants in town. With small children, driving is necessary. Parking was tough around dinner time - make reservations wherever you go!

Would I stay here again? You bet! Enjoy your vacation.

La Mer A+++++

by TripAdvisor Member philliesphan1001

We just returned from our first visit to Cape May. The La Mer was the perfect place to stay. Once we arrived we noticed that the hotel is located away from the center of town and were somewhat concerened. It turned out to be a great location. The rooms are very clean for a beach hotel. We actually stayed in the older part of the hotel without an ocean view to save a few bucks and it was fine.
At check in the associate was most helpful with giving us restaurants and expalining how to get around town. Parking can be an issue, like any beach town. We did not stay Friday or Saturday night, but the entire time we were there parking was easy. The hotel has covered parking, easy in and out. If you go downtown, Cape May runs a trolly every 20 minutes that cost $2 each way. We did not use the trolly. Each time we went downtown we parked at the Acme Market on Ocean & Laffyette. It cost $4 per hour/max $32. There are certain stores that validate parking, I am told, but we didn't look into that. There are also meters everywhere. .25 for 20 minutes. Bring a roill of quarters if you plan to use the meters.
The restaurant at the hotel, the Pier House was a great place for lunch and dinner, they will bring food to the pool for you. There is another restauant two doors down from the hotel, Peter Shields Inn. We did not eat there. They have a dress code and do not accomodate children or infants.
The pool was large and very clean, plenty of chairs.
If you visit the website and click on room tour, not all rooms look like the one they have pictured. We broght some microwaveable snacks and our room had a small fridge and no microwave. We asked at check in and the associate still very polite told us to call first the next time we visit or to make the reservation over the phone. We were happy taking the chaper room, it gave us more $$$ to spend on dinners.
Beach access is right across the street from the hotel. You need a beach tag from 10am till 5 pm. They are $5 a day and you buy them as you are going on the beach. Well worth it, the beach is very nice.

Great family hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Blodgett

We have been to La Mer twice and really love it. We went in June after not having been to Cape May for a few years. We didn't realize that La Mer had undergone a renovation. There's a new lobby and the way you drive in is in the back now. Also, the mini golf and the bike rentals are gone (the new lobby is where they used to sit).

So, why do we like La Mer? Well, the rooms are big and clean. We're a family with allergies, so smoke, mold and pet dander are big issues for us. We have found many of the other beachfront Cape May hotels have issues, especially from smoke and mold. Not the case here. The pool at La Mer is also nice and the convenience of having the beach across the street cannot be beat. This stretch of Cape May beach is far less crowded than the area down by the mall. No complaints from us. Free parking at La Mer was also nice. We were there mid-week and did not have any issues finding a spot.

The one drawback is the long walk to town. If you want a glass of wine with dinner and don't want to drive, it's a trek back to La Mer. We walked to town many times during our stay, but we did find ourselves driving to town from time to time. Overall, we think La Mer is the best choice for us in Cape May. We will be back.

Our stay at La Mer

by TripAdvisor Member mommy22boys

We just returned from a wonderful weekend in Cape May staying at La Mer Beachfront Inn. Overall, we had a decent stay. The rooms were a nice size and we had a kitchenette which was helpful in keeping the kids fed throughout the day :-) Our room was clean upon check-in but the daily maid service was lacking a bit. The pool is a nice size and it had a shallow end for toddlers. We were surprised that the pool closed at 6pm. It would have been nice to stay a bit longer--there was poolside food/drink service which is a plus. The hotel staff could have been more helpful with restaurant choices and directions. When I asked for family friendly dining the gal at the desk looked at me as if I were asking where to dine with martians! The only recommendation she gave was the hotel's restaurant. I also asked where a popular beach was and she had no clue. Not that she wasn't friendly, just not knowledgeable. The hotel is directly across the street from the beach and we did have a wonderful view of the ocean. I think the next time we visit Cape May we will stay closer to the action near the center of town.
We loved Cape May (1st visit) and plan on returning soon!!
