Jim Hogan is one of the most...

by SURFIN7TH

Jim Hogan is one of the most informative people I've met in Cape May. He is a volenteer employee who we met at the top of the Lighthouse in Cape May. If you want to learn about Cape May past and present, pay the $5.00, walk up the spiral staircase and take some time to talk to Jim. You wont regret it.

A day trip to Atlantic City

by toonsarah

It seemed to us that you can’t come to New Jersey and not visit Atlantic City! And while it may not be everybody’s idea of the best time to visit the seaside, we deliberately chose our one bad weather day to head north to the State’s most famous resort. This is the weather in which I most enjoy the English seaside, and it proved just right for our visit here as well. A blowy stroll along the boardwalk, taking photos of the waves crashing against the piers, a visit to an interesting little museum, lunch in a casino – what a good way to spend a day too dull for many other pursuits!

On arriving in Atlantic City our first challenge was parking. Most of the roads dead-ended at a casino, where parking was limited to hotel guests. Eventually we found a public parking lot but there was no one on duty to pay so we took a gamble and left the car without paying. (Later we grew worried about this as someone told us they were quick to tow cars in the area, so we returned and moved it to a meter, but I suspect we’d have been OK to leave it as the weather had deteriorated so much they weren’t bothering too much).

Walking north along the Boardwalk we found much to interest us and to photograph. Candid shots of other visitors, neglected end-of-season attractions, stray cats and beach scenes all caught our eyes. Reaching Garden Pier we visited the excellent Atlantic City Historical Museum (see my New Jersey page for more about this) and the less good (but still worth a visit) Art Center opposite.

Returning the way we had come we stopped at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino to have lunch at the Hard Rock Café. We then drove back to Cape May via Margate to see the apparently famous Lucy the Elephant, but by then the weather had turned so wet that we didn’t linger for photographs but instead headed back to our comfortable apartment for a cosy night in!

THE place to dine

by evilprebil about The Mad Batter

The Mad Batter provides a large unique breakfast. The coffee is good, the breakfast menu is also good. If you wish, the full service bar will provide you great mimosas early in the AM. It is also open for every other meal, but I've only been fortunate enough to eat breakfast here. Always a treat and usually not too crowded. A definate must do! Morgan Rostie...lump crabmeat (and I mean LUMP, the crab alone should be the cost of the meal), gryere cheese, potatoes, egg and lots of other great things (once again, fiance is a fan of the crab, not me, but even i've enjoyed tasting this dish)

TEA ROOM FOR TWO??

by VeronicaG about Twining's Tearoom

Spend time on a Victorian estate sipping tea in a converted carriage house--this is Twining's!

Twining's Tearoom is located on the Emlen Physick Estate in Cape May. There are two different teas served: The Tea Luncheon begins at 11:30 am and includes tea sandwiches, soups, salads, pastries and beverage; An Elegant Afternoon Tea begins at 2:00 pm and includes finger sandwiches, pastries, scones/breads and beverage.

A sample of the tea/finger sandwiches: tearoom chicken salad; cucumber with twinings herbal mint tea cream cheese; egg salad with garden chives; curried shrimp salad; smoked turkey, roasted asparagus and truffle mayonnaise; roasted tomato with puree of white bean and roasted garlic. You are permitted any combination of four choices.

We've enjoyed both teas and each is delectable! Don't visit Cape May without taking time for tea at Twinings--it adds a nice touch to your Victorian visit. Make reservations on theme weekends or holidays. Anything is wonderful!
