Ramada Inn- by Hotels Unlimited: Easy and cheap

Recently renovated, the Ramada Inn and Conference Center, at exit 8 of the NJ Turnpike, 20 minutes west of downtown, is a very popular place for business people and those wanting an overnight stay. It contains one of the largest conference and banquet centers in the state, and for a roadside chain hotel is fairly upscale. There is a bistro/coffee shop located off the lobby downstairs. Room service is offered.

Unique Quality: There is a courtyard outside with a pool and garden which is great for weddings and during the summer. The views from the rooms are just of the parking lot or Monmouth St. outside.

Colts Neck Inn Hotel: Another full service hotel

The Colts Neck Inn Hotel is a full service hotel which dates from the 1700's, located about 15 minutes east of downtown on Rt. 537. There isn't much information about this hotel available online, and all I really know about it is that it's supposedly very upscale and "haunted", as well as expensive. There is a shopping center across the street, and a weekday-only busstop on the corner.

  • Opinion of Price: more expensive than average

Hepburn House Hotel: Beautiful Downtown Hotel

The Hepburn house is located in a beautiful Victorian mansion across the street from the courthouse downtown, and only a 5 minute walk from most downtown restaurants, shops, and transportation facilities. Located on a quiet street, this hotel caters to the business and leisure traveller alike, offering (excellent) and free breakfast every morning, with free wine, sherry, and coffee in the lobby all hours of the day. Although it is small, this hotel is tastefully appointed with furnishings and paintings from the 1800's, and each room is decorated in different style. A night in the Barrister's Presidental Suite (one of the most beautiful hotel rooms anywhere, in my opinion) will cost you only $5 more than a regular hotel room at Freehold Gardens during the fall and winter.

Unique Quality: The corridors of this hotel are very narrow, and this hotel is not recommended for those who use wheelchairs or have troubles getting up stairs, because all rooms are on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors, and there is no elevator. The chef makes unique and spectacular breakfasts, which are served in the dining area every morning, and during the summer outside on the porch as well. Most rooms afford a view of the street and courthouse.
