Travel Tips for Hackensack

Fans of HBO's 'The Sopranos'...

by BuickMackane

Fans of HBO's 'The Sopranos' television series will be thrilled by a visit to Hackensack. Although the show's stories take place in towns located southwest of the city, quite a bit of the actual filming is done in and around Hackensack. According to the excellent and fully comprehensive Web site 'Sopranos On Location' at the following locations in the Hackensack area appear in 'The Sopranos':

Satin Dolls nightclub on Route 17 South is the real 'Bada Bing'; it's located near the Party Box which is a party supplies store seen in one episode. One of the real-life Satin Dolls dancers, Justine Noelle, was even selected to become a member of the 'Sopranos' cast. Be sure to watch for Justine during the 'Bada Bing' scenes; she's the lovely lady with the red hair!

The Tri-Boro Diner located on Essex Street on the Lodi border and also the Hackensack Gardens apartment complex at the corner of Essex Street and Arcadia Road.

Solari's Restaurant on River Street opposite The Record (newspaper), just north of the Bergen County Courthouse.

In nearby Paramus, other scenes were filmed along Paramus Road at Bergen Community College, the Old Mill Bathing Beach (swim club) and the El Cid Restaurant (a nightclub that has changed names many times over the years).

Please visit the Sopranos On Location site for updates!

Here's the world-famous...

by BuickMackane

Here's the world-famous Olympic figure skater Sarah Hughes. Did you know that she commuted all the way from her home on Long Island -- two hours each way, six days a week -- to train at the Ice House located on Midtown Bridge Approach in Hackensack? Now that's dedication! Congratulations, Sarah!!

Hackensack is a cultural melting pot

by BuickMackane

There is a large Italian community in Hackensack, especially in the First Ward neighborhood below the Courthouse. The *original* film entitled 'Jersey Girl' (featuring Aida Turturro who now plays Janice Soprano on HBO's 'The Sopranos' and Dylan McDermott who now plays Bobby Donnell on ABC's 'The Practice') was filmed in this neighborhood at 75 Lodi Street and also across town at the intersection of Passaic and Linden Streets. In recent years, the city has become largely Hispanic with a large Colombian and Dominican population. There are also many native Irish people in the city.

Packing List

by BuickMackane

Bring what you would normally pack for a hotel. You'll do more walking in Manhattan or at the malls than you will around Hackensack. Comfortable shoes for marching around the malls! You can get anything you need from numerous chain drug stores. Hackensack University Medical Center has become world-renowned and keeps expanding. You can get whatever you need at Gene Hacker's Camera Shop on River Street; it's been there forever! The Jersey Shore is a long way from Hackensack; bumper-to-bumper traffic, but it's a big part of our culture from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Tennis is popular in Bergen County, so plan accordingly. My top pick is the Maywood Tennis Club on West Passaic Street in Maywood.

(Hey, those desserts looked so great that I think I'll end this page with another one, the Napoleon with Filo and Creme Brulee...sweet memories of Hackensack!)

The County Seat

by Donna_in_India

Hackensack is a city located in northern New Jersey's Bergen County. It is also the county seat. It's ideally located 12 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan and easily accessible by bus or rail.

About 45,000 people call Hackensack home and its population is extremely diverse.

The massive Hackensack University Medical Center and Fairleigh Dickinson University, as well as the county jail and stately County Court House are all located in Hackensack. The World War II submarine USS Ling and the New Jersey Naval Museum are here too. The 300+ year old First Dutch Reformed Church (Church on The Green) is New Jersey's 2nd oldest church and the county's oldest.

Hackensack is/has been home to many famous resident and has pop culture connections in music, movies, books, and TV.

There is plenty of shopping including an upscale mall and several good restaurants.
