View of the State Capitol from our room by toonsarah We spent one night at this hotel, using it as a convenient stop-over between the Delaware River and Newark Liberty Airport. As such, it was absolutely fine for our purposes, though heavy rain kept us in the hotel so I can’t really comment on whether its location was as convenient as we’d hoped. We had a lovely big room with a king size bed and all the conveniences you would expect in a four star hotel. The bathroom was a good size and well equipped with towels and toiletries. Because of the rain we decided to eat in the hotel and that was our one disappointment with it. For some reason (Saturday night?) the restaurant was only serving an all-you-can-eat buffet, which neither of us fancied – it would only have been good value if we’d wanted to pile our plates high and stuff our faces, and in any case I’m not a big fan of buffets. The alternative was to eat in the bar which had a reasonable menu but wasn’t a great space for eating in, with too-small tables and rather rough and ready service (our mains came when we were less than halfway through our starter). Still, overall we were happy with our stay and the restaurant redeemed itself with friendly service and good breakfast options (loved the healthy version of French Toast!) the next morning.

I’m duplicating this tip from my Cape May page because I really want to recommend this place to as many people as possible, but do please skip it if you’ve already read it there! We decided that as we would be staying in Cape May for a whole week it would be nice to rent an apartment rather than stay in a hotel or bed and breakfast as we would usually do. Researching our options on the web I came across the website for the local paper, the Cape May Times, which had an excellent selection of rental properties of all sizes (and to suit most budgets). From this we picked out the Shore S Cape, which seemed to offer everything we wanted at a very good price. It proved to be an excellent choice. On our arrival we received a very friendly welcome from our landlady, Donna, who showed us to a light and airy apartment on the ground floor. It was a warm sunny day and the several doors between our sitting room and the porch all stood open to let in the fresh air. We felt at home immediately, a feeling that remained until she waved us off, with gifts of cookies and apples for the journey, a week later. The apartment consists of three rooms. At the front is that lovely cheerful sitting room, with windows on two sides, a comfortable sofa, dining table and chairs and a kitchen area. The latter was well-supplied with utensils, cutlery etc. We mostly ate out, but we did find these useful on our one stormy evening when we stayed home in front of the TV (with a DVD borrowed from Donna’s supply), a light supper and a few beers. We also made good use of the coffee machine during our stay. If needed there’s a microwave as well as the regular oven; fridge stocked with milk; coffee, tea and sugar all provided – so you can have a drink out on the porch as soon as you arrive! The porch by the way wraps round to the front. The side portion is allocated for the private use of this apartment, while the bit at the front is communal. Beyond the sitting room is the bedroom, which also has a door out onto the porch and is decorated in the same navy and white (with touches of red) colour scheme. Although not large, it has plenty of storage space and a decent sized double bed. Beyond this again is the bathroom, which is probably the least good of the rooms, being a little on the small side. But it’s absolutely fine for two people, as long as you don’t want to spend your holiday soaking in a tub (there isn’t one!) or pampering yourself.
The house itself is a lovely Victorian in the typical local “Painted Lady” style (more on the Painted Ladies in my General tip). It’s in a good location, only one block from the sea, though the town centre is a little further – about ten minutes on foot. But it’s a very pleasant walk through quiet streets lined with more of these historic houses, and we never felt the need to take the car when going out for dinner. Donna and Steve made us very welcome. I already mentioned the cookies on departure, but these weren’t the first we’d sampled as Donna had presented us with some earlier in the week too. They were as delicious as the smells coming from her kitchen had suggested they would be. When I mentioned that I was planning to write this tip for VT she took me upstairs to see the two bedroom apartment on the top floor. This also looked lovely, with its own deck at the back overlooking the town, two good sized bedrooms and lots of space – it would be ideal for a family. All in all I can really recommend the Shore S Cape. But I would warn you to go soon – there was a For Sale sign outside, and although Donna told me it will probably be a few years before she and Steve sell up, you might not want to take that chance! During our one month stay in New Jersey, we stayed at Days Inn, Hillsborough which is just 2 minutes away from my parents house. We were fortunate that my sister in law was working with them at that time and so we were able to avail discount. We booked 2 superior bedrooms for me and hubby and the kids. The room was spacious and clean. The linens, pillows and towels are all stain free. Although their TV sets are outdated and limited channels are available still it turned out to be ok. All rooms are equipped with high speed internet access and wireless internet for free. Fridge are working in both rooms as well as the microwave. They have changed the management during our stay when we got back from Orlando. And the transition and new policy doesnt seemed to be very good. Before, breakfast is being served at their Manhattan Restaurant with ample space for guests to eat. Good selection of American breakfast including single serving of jam, butter etc.. Now, they've decided to served breakfast near the lobby wherein it only has 3 tables. Butter, cheese and Jam are being served in one big bottle where you have to get one for yourself and then you have to return it back again for the other guests who's waiting in line. However, all in all our stay was excellent. Price per room: Superior: $ 110.00 + tax per night based on twin/double occupancy

During our first visit, we stayed in a double bedroom located on the 26th floor. Spacious room with great view. Nice interior and luxurious bathroom. by tompt The hotel is close to the Newark airport, but not in the big city. Ideal for a first night stay, just to rest after the journey and plan your trip ahead. And if you like to go to NewYork city, it is very close, we could see the skyscrapers from our window.

by SURFIN7TH Like most beach resorts in NJ, Ocean City has sqeezed in as much accommodations as possible. It is still difficult to get a place to stay on holiday weekends and especially for Nights in Venice. Even the Shoobie Shack has to put up its no vacancy sign on occasion.

View from Window by johngayton This is very much towards the budget end of the market as far as a New York/New Jersey visit is concerned, but that is not to say that it is not worth considering. If all you require is a room for a couple of nights and don't require the services of a classier joint then this is ideal. The rooms are clean, reasonably comfortable, continental breakfast is complimentary and fairly substantial - waffles, toast, donuts, muffins etc as well as cereal, fruit juices and vending machine coffee. The only gripe I had was that the advertised Wi-Fi didn't work in my room but my dial-up was a local call and hence free so that wasn't too much of an inconvenience.
Whilst the hotel is not perhaps in the plushest of locations, more Union City than North Bergen, it is an interesting locale. The public transport links (buses) run both into New York and to Jersey City, the NY bus from outside the front door and the Jersey City service from Kennedy Blvd round the corner.
