Airport bus from Newark airport

by gilabrand

Has anyone used the airport bus at Newark airport to get to Manhattan? Was it easy to access, and how long a ride was it? Basically, I need to get to Larchmont (Westchester), but there don't seem to be many transportation options if I am not prepared to shell out $100 or more on a private taxi. The other alternative suggested to me was taking the bus ($15) to Grand Central, and getting on the Metro North. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced shared van that could get me to Larchmont?

Hi - we used the Super Shuttle which is a shared service, and found it pretty efficient and good value. It actually cost only a couple of dollars more than using the bus and subway combination, and was well worth the extra for the door to door service. I've written a full tip about it on my NYC page at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/a0272/cd624/9/ or you could look at the Super Shuttle website: http://www.supershuttle.com/

It is some time since I was there but used to visit regularly on United

Came out of terminal, turned left, and there was a public bus that I'd catch down to the Port Authority terminal in NY - easy and inexpensive

Google Port Authority and NJ Transit to find current info this will at least get you into the transport hub

Good Luck

Unfortunately, the Supershuttle doesn't serve Larchmont. I can get to Grand Central for $23, but as I said the bus costs $15 to take me to the same place, so the shuttle has no advantage in this case.

I would suggest taking the train/metro to the city and then transfering (At Penn Station?)to the amtrak run (northeast regional?) that heads towards New Haven.Larchmont is one of the commuter stops.Should be painless and cheaper than a hired taxi.

FOundryman, I agree. I swear by CoachUSA out of Newark to Port Authority then Grand Central. The OP can walk across the street and take the train to Larchmont. I suspect the train fare would be $10 or so 1 way. I went to Brewster recently, and paid $25 R/T off peak. To hire a mini van would cost 100 or more, and then you'd subject yourself to traffic jams (and no access to bathroom). It would probably take more time than the bus and train combined.

I'll use this thread to ask a question.... Any problems having luggage on CoachUSA? Meaning a travel suitcase weighing in the range of 15-20kg?

No problem at all. For smaller luggage, use the overhead racks (just like on a plane). You can load the larger ones in the outdoor compartments next to the front door, between the axles, just like a regular tour bus.

Newark Tip

Popcorn fights during class at Rutgers Newark. If you read my New Brunswick page, you'll know how much I hated Rutgers New Brunswick. I did my first year of grad school at Rutgers Newark and loved it. The professors were interesting, small campus and great classmates. It was a blast until stupid me picked a concentration that was only offered in New Brunswick.

Thankfully, I don't actually live IN Newark, but rather 12 miles away. A tourist must see our shopping malls - Woodbridge Center and Menlo Park Mall. We live 40 minutes from the New Jersey shore. The beaches are beautiful and the Atlantic Ocean the best.

New Jersey Devils

by NewarkDevil

The New Jersey Devils currently play in the Meadowlands about five minutes northeast of Newark. They plan however to move with the Nets to a new Arena downtown on Market and McCarter Highway. They have won 2 Stanley Cup Championships in the last 8 years, have the second best overall regular season record over the last decade, and are continually one of the best teams in the league. For fast-paced hockey action come to the Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands Sports Complex of East Rutherford.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart and Branch Brook Park. The Cathedral is the sixth largest in the country and has towers taller than those at Westminster and Notre Dame. The park is a creation of Fredrick Law Olmsted, designer of New York's Central Park and the Mall in Washington, D.C., and has more cherry blossom trees than any single place outside of Japan. Truly a sight to see in the spring.

McGovern's Tavern, on New Street, between Halsey Street and Washington Street (across from Rutgers College) Nice atmoshere, congenial bar tenders. A bit of the Old Sod in the heart of Newark! A richly ethnic Irish Bar (just check out the juke box!) with all the drinks that are fitting. Food is served daily and is delicious.
