Loadging in Newark, but fun in Manhattan

by gecor

Hello.
I'm attending a wedding in Plainfield, NJ.
That's why I would like to be in a hotel close to that area, I want to have the option to go to Manhattan every day...
A) Because hotels are cheaper in NJ areas
B) Because of the wedding :D

My question is. What specific area do you recommend me to stay, so I can get a public transport to New York every day. If so, what kind of transport is a good option.
My idea is to leave every morning to NY and come back to the the hotel at night.

Thanks for your response.

Plainfield has a train station on the NJ Transit Raritan Valley and has hourly trains to and from New York started around six am and last train back a little after midnight.

I once stayed in the Meadowland-Secaucus area and really enjoyed it because there was a bus stop right across the street from our hotel (we stayed at the La Quinta Inn but there were other hotels nearby). Bus 320 took us near Times Square in about 20-25 minutes, and buses ran every 10-15 minutes, so it was a very convenient (and cheap) way to travel to Manhattan. Hope this helps!

One does not go to Newark; one leaves Newark. Hoboken, and other towns near either the PATH or NJT buses, offer convenience without looking over your shoulder.

Visit the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). Beautiful! Free live music outdoors in the summer and good food at the indoor restaurant. Seeing the old Yankees around the Den. The Scooter, Yogi, Sparky, Cerone, Bam Bam, and also the Cansecos.

Newark Tip

Wow! This was the meeting place of all the poeple in the United States Collegiate Wind Band, Tour 1999. We met there on July 4th. It was SO hot!! Atleast it was to me. We spent five days, rehearsing 10 hours a day, here in Newark. On our free time we tended to stay somewhat indoors where there was air conditioning. But the weather all around was beautiful and the people were nice.

Newark Bears

by NewarkDevil

Go to a Newark Bears game. I know, its not Major League Baseball, but its really fun especially if you've got kids.
They really make a good attempt to get the crowd into the game and they bring in decent talent who are either in contract disputes or retired from the Major Leagues. Its also a little piece of Newark history. Many years ago Newark had two minor league teams, the Bears (AAA Yankee affiliate) and the Eagles (Negro League). These two were the focal point of the town and kept a very racially diverse city in agreement on one point: Newark baseball ROCKS!!! The Bears eventually moved and the Eagles folded along with the rest of the Negro League. The current Bears play in the Atlantic League which is independent of the Majors.

by NewarkDevil

Well, I like Weequahic Park which is way down in the southernmost part of the town not too far from the airport. The only problem with the park is that the surrounding neighborhood is not exactly the safest in the city. The park itself is safe, but walking around the Weequahic section might not be the best idea. If you do decide to go down here and see the park and one of the very few public golf courses in the area then simply take the precaution of leaving before nightfall. The park itself is another Olmsted design and surrounds a manmade lake at its center. The second largest of Newark's parks after the aforementioned Branch Brook Park, I've seen people playing every sort of sport on its fields from cricket to soccer to baseball to football. There is a new running path around the lake and I think you can take very small boats out too.

by NewarkDevil

Hobbie's Deli (great corned beef, pastrami sandwiches, etc. Dinners are also available) corner of Branford Place and Halsey Street. This place has been there a very long time and probably is the last of the Jewish Deli's in Newark. The food there is awesome! If you haven't been there, you're missing out on something special!
