Since we gave up our seats voluntary, Continental Airlines payed our room and breakfast in this hotel. We arrived late in the night after being driven to two other hotels which had no room for us. When we finally arrived at this hotel after midnight we took a shower and went to sleep.
The next morning we had a breakfast which was good en then we left to see if our plane wasn't overbooked today...
Unique Quality: The room was spacious, the bed was very good to sleep in. There was a large indoor pool, also the rooms next to the pool had a balcony as if they where outside..
I think this hotel can be very nice to stay in for a longer time then we did..

to give you an idea how the hotel and area looks like...
Well thats how we got in this hotel anyway...Giving up our seats on an overbooked aircraft... It isn't that easy and takes some time...but it payed most of our next flight to the us...
I'd appreciate advice on somewhere nice to stay for 1 night. We're arriving at Newark at around 2.30pm on a Sunday afternoon. Eventual destination is Boston and ultimately Tanglewood. It would be nice to find somewhere about 50 miles from Newark but not too far off the beaten track that our journey to Boston the following day is horrendous.

If you are looking for good quality discount hotels then I would suggest Holiday Inn Newark International Airport. Its available from $59/night through http://cnghotels.com and if you prefer very cheap hotels then Howard Johnson Newark can be booked for as low as $36/night at http://Expedia.com
Both of the above hotels are located within 5 miles of the Newark International Airport.
In case you prefer to stay in luxury hotels then you can go for The Sheraton Newark Airport Hotel which is just 1.5 miles from the Airport. It costs about $160/night and I think it offers very good value for money.
It's probably best to look around Stamford, CT. It's a fairly big city, they have a Sheraton, Marriott, etc. It's probably about 50 miles from Newark Airport and, more importantly, it will get you past NYC on a leisurly Sunday afternoon. Monday morning is not a good time to try to do this.

I'm not quite sure why your journey would be "horrendous"--it's really not that far, and if you don't want to drive, you can take one train all the way from Newark Airport to Boston. If you haven't thought of taking the train, give it some consideration, because it is a very good way to do the trip. You can pick up your rental car as you are leaving Boston. You really won't want or need the car there anyway--driving and parking in Boston are not fun at all, and there is tons of public transit to get you where you need to go.
