Growin' Up Here
When I was a kid you could ride your bike on the boardwalk. You still can, before 11 am. Pedal up to Dunkin' Donuts, then work off the calories. Then go lie on the beach and grab some pizza for lunch. Play mini-golf on a roof-top with a view of the ocean. Have a seafood dinner while you check out the crowd. Then watch a movie on the beach before your nightcap at one of a dozen boardwalk bars. Not bad for New Jersey. I grew up on Long Beach Island. Either I was living with my dad in Ortley Beach, or spending the summers with my mom at the Monterrey Beach house. I seem to re-visit every seven years, like a locust, drawn by the past and inevitably disappointed by the reality of the present.
Yep, the same early-1900's carousel is still spiinin', but there's a new water park, too. I can get Jersey pizza, long-neck clams and Italian ice, but I can also find Mexican and middle eastern food. The old cottages and boatyard are gone, replaced by a condo and marina. Dad's bayside cottage is exactly the same, but Mom's tiny oceanfront bungelow has been re-built with 3 stories.
It's not quite true: You can't go home again, unless it's Jersey.
