Help for traveling to area with children

by journey67

Hi. My four children and I are making a roadtrip up the east Coast from Mississippi to Maine beginning on the 20th of May. One of our stays will be at the Crowne Plaza in Secaucus. We chose to stay there rather than actually stay in New York. ANy tips, advice on an easy way to get from the hotel to New York and back would be much appreciated. Also, any advice on cool things to see or do in Secaucus or New York would be great. THanks in advance.

I've been waiting years for someone to post in the Secaucus, NJ forum!! It should be very easy to get into the Port Authority in NYC at 42nd and Seventh Ave from the Crowne Plaza. I think the hotel might have a shuttle service but am not sure. Either way, there are a few bus lines that can take you right into the PA from near your hotel. For something to do in Secaucus, the only thing I can think of is the outlets stores that are there. You can find some good shopping. If you have a car, you should check out Hoboken for a good time. It has some great restaurants, bars, and shops and is right on the water. You can take a cheap cab ride there as well.

The only two things that might attract someone to Secaucus are somewhat lower hotel prices than in Manhattan (as you evidently already know) and the outlet mall shopping. Off of County Road there are an abundance of outlet stores and NJ doesn't charge sales tax on clothing. About 25 years ago (before "outlet malls" could found outside every major city)there were only 'true' outlet stores- just a section of the company's warehouse set up to sell over runs, end-of-season merchandise, etc. Those still exist, but there are businesses taking advantage of the idea that really aren't factory outlets at all with stores in the same area. You could take a bus to get to msot of these but it's more complicated than it's worth for a tourist. After renting a car the next best bet might be just getting a taxi from the hotel to the factory outlet area- it that interests you.

(I hit enter my mistake before I had finished)

The staff at your hotel should be able to tell you the easist way to get a bus over to NYC. There are literaly dozens of bus routes that go through Secaucus from more out-lying areas on their way into the City.
One hint for viewing the NYC skyline:
Go to Boulevard East in Weehawken (It's the last exit in New Jersey on Rt. 3 as you approach the Lincoln Tunnel. Conversely, it's the very first exit after coming out of the tunnel) There is a nice park on the edge of the palisades overlooking the Hudson River and NYC. Sometimes there are very nice sunsets from this vantage point. Also at the Southern end of the park there is a monument pointing out where the Alexander Hamilton-Aaron Burr duel took place and Hamilton was killed.
