Possibly relocating from NYC to Carlsbad, NM

by DianeM

I have made a major decision for change- going from a major city where I have lived all my life to a quiet town. Could a native, or long-time resident please give me some information only you would know- how safe is it - things for the average resident to do in the evening- are there other ethnic groups besides the heavy Mexican presence represented? Please give me as much information as you can to help me finalize what I hope will be my dream move. I am looking for a much more quiet, solid life where I hope people are pleasant and cheerful and stress is not an everyday feeling (after 9-11, it's really stressful here).
Thank you one and all.
Diane

Diane,

Yes, there are many Anglos in Carlsbad too. I'm not sure about the Mexican population (I'm from Albuquerque), but the Hispanic population is probably significant down there also. It's real safe, I think they just had their first murder in 10 years (or was that Portales??). Quite a few tourists down there too, with Carlsbad Caverns.

Did you make the move? If so, is Carlsbad what you expected?

Travel Tips for Carlsbad

Carlsbad Tip

by smoox

NOT really a FOND memory: There are thousands of bats in there. They will leave you alone in the caves since they sleep during the day and leave the cave at around sunset (see below). But if you have any doubts, don´t go there. I felt a bit funny - but maybe I have just watched to many Dracula-movies.

The past

Another corner of the caves. I can't help but wonder about the past travelers who had been here when it was first discovered! How did they descend into the depth of the caves & how much courage was needed???

CR 206: The crazy back road

by bocmaxima

If you really want to explore a region, get a good map!
Benchmark makes an excellent, detailed atlas of New Mexico, which lead me to CR 206 northeast of town into the oil and gas fields on Carlsbad's extreme outskirts. The road runs north from town as Canal Street and ends up at US 82 several miles east of Artesia. It takes a little longer than 285, but it's a much more interesting drive.

Carlsbad Caverns Nature Trail

by roamer61

Though most visitors who travel to the park concentrate on the caverns, a nearby nature trail will give you a good sampling of desert flora and fauna. It is about 1/2 mile long. Keep an eye out for lizards. This is prime habitat for them. I spotted 2 Collared Lizards. The trail makes for an interesting diversion and is recommended if you have the time.

Carlsbad, NM USA

by hutchha

Strange little city on the Pecos river. Supported primarily by Dept. of Energy personnel who work at the nuclear waste storage facility. The area has a vast network of underground caverns. Carlsbad caverns is open to the public and easy to walk through (handicap access). Lechuguilla caverns are closed to the public. The same geologic forces that made the caverns made it possible to store nuclear waste - so here it resides.
