We were in town visiting family, one car, many people. The college kids were on a strict budget, so we all stayed at this motel to simplify logistics with only one car.

The facility is more like a motel, as all the rooms are in a "U" shape around the outdoor pool, and the doors open out to the pool area. There are no interior hallways.

My room had a king size bed, and since we had a deluxe room, we had a newer flat screen TV, a mini-fridge, a microwave, and a desk and chair. While I appreciated that the desk was large and there was a lot of room to work in, the bed was rather close to the one wall to accommodate the desk. Getting out of that side of the bed was tricky, as most of the available space was occupied by the heating/cooling unit. Our room also had a heavy perfumed cleaner stench each day. We'd get back and I'd have to open the windows for a few minutes to air the room out. Other members of the group did not have this problem - their rooms smelled fine.

The provided toiletries were minimal - a bar of soap, and a single squeeze packet of conditioning shampoo. The number of provided towels would have been sufficient for one person, but were not enough for two, when one wanted a towel to wrap her hair in while using another to dry with. Two washcloths, two hand towels, two larger towels, all thin.

The internet worked fine. The outdoor pool was closed. The free breakfast was the saddest I have ever seen. The eating area had two tables, each with two chairs. The options were two kinds of juice, two kinds of cold cereal, coffee and one pitcher of milk. If you were hoping to feed the group before heading out, this was not the place to go. If you aren't a breakfast person, then you won't mind. On Sunday morning, one member of the group went in about an hour earlier than the rest, and reported bananas and yogurt made a brief appearance.

Over all, it was a clean room, easy to find off the interstate, and it was a straight shot into down town. However, if we go again, we will look at staying at one of the other hotels in the area. For the same price, we could have had a hotel with an indoor pool or a decent breakfast.

GALLUP -DOWNTOWN MURAL PROJECT

by LoriPori

The ambitious DOWNTOWN MURAL PROJECT goal is to retell the story of Gallup, New Mexico through a series of Murals on wall spaces throughout Downtown. The Murals are best seen by taking a walking tour.
The Murals depict some of the city's proudest and saddest moments. The Artists were selected through a rigorous process overseen by Gallup Fine Arts Advisory. They represent some of the finest living artists in the area.
The Mural in the first picture depicts Native Indian arts and crafts.
The second mural is very colourful & beautiful, but sadly the paint is coming off

A Winter Drive to Gallup

by BorderHopper

"On the trail to New Mexico"

We decided to take a drive from Los Angeles, California with the intent of going as far as we can go within the short time period I had off of work. We had no destination in mind, but after one long drive we ended up in Gallup, New Mexico. Of course the place is nothing like Los Angeles...but it sure was an interesting destination which allowed us to explore the nearby Navajo Nation and Canyon de Chelly.

"Hot Water & a Locking Door"

It was the new year, 2004 when we rolled into Gallup in our durable 1997 Chrysler Concord. The long trip on the interstate had worn us out and Gallup looked pretty inviting to two wary travellers like my wife and I. A busy railroad cut right through our part of town and we chose the cheapest lodging we could find advertised along Highway 66. I'm still not sure if we were on the wrong side of the tracks but we couldn't beat the advertised price of $17.99. Road side motels in America are usually pretty grungy and the Desert Skies Motel was no exception.....but my wife and I are grizzled backpackers used to staying in dives from Calcutta to San Salvador. The room was home while in Gallup & it served its purpose of giving two tired travellers a place to bed down for a night or two. Hey, at least it had hot water and a door that locks!

"Real Cowboys & Indians: The American Bar"

While in Gallup we hung out in the American Bar on Coal Street. That's in downtown...right off the rail road tracks. The clientel were obviously comfortable in their cowboy boots and wide brimmed hats...most were native Navajo American men sipping beers and playing pool. It wasn't long before we were invited to join them in conversation and games. The people we met at the American Bar on Coal Street were very kind & were a big reason why we have such fond memories of this strange little town in New Mexico. I can't say we'll ever be back in Gallup....but we're glad we saw it.
