like stepping into a time capsule
While on my last cross-country drive, I stopped for the night in Gallup. New Mexico. What a piece of luck! The town is located along old route #66 and seems to be stuck in the era that saw that roadway become a prominent part of American history.
The "strip", while tiny, still retains much of what looks like vintage signage and neon. Lots and lots of neon!
I chose the El Rancho motel for my night's accomodation.. It was evident that the motel had also played a prominent role in that bygone era, evidenced by much of what must have been it's original flavor. The lobby is fabulous! Lots of wood and many, many pics of movie stars from decades past. Apparently the place was quite the magnet for such personalities.
Each room was named for a person from out country's cinematic history. I stayed in the "Errol Flynn" room.
The rooms look to have had no updates since Mr. Flynn's time, but it was quiet and appeared clean.
So that would sum up my experiences in Gallup.
It was difficult to pass up all those interesting places in New Mexico that my map made mention of.
Hmmmmm.......hoping the future holds an extended visit back to New Mexico for this wanderer.
