River City Area History
by DEBBBEDB
Red River was first called River City. When ores were found, hundreds of gold, silver and copper mines were carved into the mountain with names like Golden Treasure, Silver King and Black Copper. There were two general merchantiles, a livery stable, two newspapers, a sawmill, blacksmith shop, barber shop, more than a dozen saloons, several hotels and boarding houses, a dance hall and a hospital. There was also red light district with plenty of gambling and barroom brawls.
When the mines played out, homesteaders outnumbered prospectors. Town gained new momentum by renting abandoned mining cabins to flatland visitors seeking refuge from the heat. Now, there are year-round activities, from skiing and snowmobiling to fishing, hiking, four-wheeling, and horseback riding.

Our Ski Trip
by DEBBBEDB
A group of us with children went to Red River to go skiing. We left Thursday and drove to Amarillo where we will spent the night. Friday, we drove the rest of the way. We skied Sat, Sun and Mon and then drove all the way home on Tues (12 hrs). The kids don't have school on Fri or Mon (one day is staff day and one is MLK holiday) so they just missed one day of school on Tues while we are traveling.
