Visit the Historic Downtown...

Visit the Historic Downtown area for fine Art Galleries, arts and crafts shops, and to take a step back in time with the appearance of the old west town look. Best memory is of Graduation from Silver High School, home of the Fighting Colts.
Friendly natives
by mhellman
People in Silver City are very friendly and will often say hello to anybody they may pass on the street. This sometimes startles visitors, especially those from the East Coast of the US (where many people on the street keep their head down and avoid eye contact with strangers).
Another local custom is for drivers on lightly-traveled roads to wave to those traveling in the opposite direction. Waving back is the friendly thing to do, even if you only lift one finger off the steering wheel.
Unusual, accessible natural wonder
by mhellman
About 30 miles east of Silver City is City of Rocks State Park. A volcano blew its stack about 30 million years ago and deposited a pile of rocks hundreds of miles away on an otherwise flat plain. These monoliths have survived wind and water and have incredible shapes. Great to climb on, walk or drive around and a nearby hill is a perfect spot for watching the sunset. There is also a cactus garden, visitor center and over 50 campsites hidden among the rocks.
Silver City Museum: The Cupola
by Basaic
Architecturally, one of the most interesting parts of the museum is the cupola. When the home was first built the cupola helped cool the home and provided natural lighting. Today, it offers visitors a nice view of the town. The view to the north is dominated by the Western New Mexico Campus and "Gospel Hill", so called because of the number of churches located there. To the south you will see one of Silver City's oldest neighborhoods. It is named "La Capilla" for the chapel that was located on the hilltop until 1915. To the west the view is dominated by the Grant County Court House.

"A Must - Whiskey Creek Dude Ranch-Gila Wilderness"
To get to the Whiskey Creek Dude Ranch and Outfitters you need to drive exactly 14.3 miles at the start of Highway 35 north off of Hwy 152 at the town of Mimbres, NM then turn right on FR150 (make sure you have a high clearance vehicle) and drive exactly 23.3 miles (about 1.3 hours) and turn right at trailhead 62 and then you will need to keep to the left and you will drive over the same creek twice in one mile and you will enter the Whiskey Creek Dude Ranch Gate. Go one mile and there is the 1885 ranch house. There is trought fishing, horse back riding, day trips or 5 day trips. If you want to be a cowboy this is the place to be. You can ride on horseback for 20 days in a straight line non stop and you will still be in the Gila Wilderness/Aldo Leopold Wilderness. Lots of creeks, wildlife and ponderosa pines. see www.whiskeycreekduderanch.com for more info.
"The town of Pinos Altos"
This is the coolest small town in all of SW New Mexico. Visit the Indian Museum, Buckhorn Saloon and the corner post office that also sells home made ice cream, pie and the best hamburgers.
