Travel Tips for Taos

take a look at the walls. They are built from clay, straw and water and are up to a few centimetres thick which means there is some kind of 'air-condition': it wards off the cold in winter and the heat in summer.
There are up to five floors per building - no stairs but ladders! In the old days, there were no windows or doors - you entered the building from the roof.

Engage locals in conversation or greeting before making requests; people are very open and you will get your answer eventually. Staring or pointing is considered rude and will evoke a hostile response.
Fascinating Self Sustaining House

This on highway 64 outside Taos. It is an community of Earthship Biotecture, homes that are not hooked up to any utilities. A tour is $5 and it was very interesting. You can stay overnight too, see the website below.
Adobe Church near Guadalupita, New Mexico
by rexvaughan
I know of nothing notable about this church except that it is a lovely and bucolic example of rural religious life. It is quite small and currently undergoing renovation inside and has a fresh coat of adobe outside. It is typical of the kinds of churches and graveyards that were quite common in the past. There are still a number of them, but they are probably decreasing in numbers rapidly as development takes over the world. It is on NM Hwy 94 just south of Mora which is about 40 miles south of Taos.

On the Camino Real
"Founded in 1875, this small farming community was first named "La Jolla". It was once famous for finely woven blankets. Here the Camino Real left the Rio Grande and followed a canyon northeast to Embudo Creek where it began a climb over the mountains to Taos." (monument highway marker sign)
