 | | | | Casa Benavides Bed & Breakfast: FABULOUS Taos B&B | Satisfaction: | | | | |
This place is fabulous and I can't imagine any nicer place to stay in Taos. They don't advertise because they get tons of business from word of mouth travel. I almost hesitate to write a review here. It's conveniently located on Kit Carson road right down the street from the Plaza, nestled amongst art galleries and fabulous gift stores. The rooms are very, very nice-- most of them with kiva fireplaces and beautiful touches here and there including down comforters, TVs w/ DVD & video players, antique furnishings, a couple hot tubs, etc.. The main building is filled with gorgeous original works of art, and the building itself is a work of art. It was designed and built by the owners and is beautifully furnished & decorated. But, I would say the best part of staying there is the amazing breakfasts that they serve as a part of your stay. You have a choice of homemade egg dishes or -- this is the best -- their granola. Their granola is TO DIE FOR. If Krispe Kremes are the crack of the South (as per Chris Rock, the comedian), then the Casa Benavides' homemade granola is the crack of Taos. OMG... I dream about their food! If breakfast isn't good enough, then come back at 4 pm for "tea and cookies" where they lay out about a dozen plates of home made cookies, muffins and other delightful treats. I probably gained 10 lbs on my last stay, but don't regret a pound! Casa Benavides is the only place I'd direct my friends & family to stay while in Taos! After reading many reviews of this hotel on other travel sites I really was not sure what to expect. I was plesantly surprised. The room we had was very spacious, clean and sufficient. The hotels grounds were kept very nice. All rooms are accessed from the outside, it's like staying in your own little apartment with nice landscaping and pathways outside of your door. The hotel has in room coffee, lotion, shampoo. Television w/cable.
The pool is large and indoors but with glass covering it so it's like being outdoors. There is also a hot tub. The lobby area is very nice and there is no longer a regular restaurant but there is a hotel bar that opens at 6 p.m. that serves a limited food menu, like pizza, etc. On Friday evenings there is music in the bar. The continental breakfast was great, I thought. It offered everything one would need for breakfast. Hard boiled eggs, milk, cereal, apples, bagels, toast, orange juice and coffee, muffins and pastries. Served in a large eating area, it was never over crowded or busy. I thought this hotel was great and for the price, it could not be beat! | | | | El Monte Sagrado Living Resort: Beautiful Accommodations, Disappointing Service Compare Rates NEW! | Satisfaction: | | | | |
While the concept behind this resort is amazing, the execution leaves quite a bit to be desired. The staff, while sweet and full of smiles, has litttle idea of how to run a resort of this caliber. Given the high cost, I definitely expected more. To begin with, I was informed upon arrival the package I had reserved would not be fulfilled. Little was done to accommodate this great inconvenience and disappointment. The restaraunt food was mediocre and overpriced, the wait service pathetic! We had to listen to dance music from the bar during our dinner.. sounds like a minor inconvenience, but when you're paying these prices in such an elegant atmosphere, you want to relax and enjoy- clearly the management doesn't have a clue.
The grounds are stunning, as was our room. The basis of the resort's healing energy, eco friendly design, and world class treatments are what appealed to us most. Unfortunately, we've decided the best way to be in touch with Taos' healing energy and alternative treatments will be better found in offbeat, smaller, locally owned accommodations and looking a little harder to find the providers of treatments not usually offered in a coorporate environment. Even on the level of just another coorporate hotel chain, however, the service was extremely disappointing.
