The High Road to Taos
by rexvaughan
Strictly speaking I think the High Road is NM Hwys 76 and 518 from Espanola to Taos, but we were on some other mountain highways that were great (I was not driving so am a little confused). At any rate this route and NM 518 from Taos to Las Vegas (New Mexico, not Nevada) takd you through some of the most scenic and historic sights you could hope for. Parts of it takes you through the gentle hills of the fertile Rio Grande Valley shown in the picture. It is enclosed by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the east and the volcanic Jemez Mountains on the west. It features some mesmerizing natural surroundings and is full of the history and culture of New Mexico. These two routes will take you to Chimayo, Montezuma, Mora and Las Trampas. This is a unique area of the US in that the culture still displays the great Spanish/Mexican influence in its art, architecture, cuisine and lifestyle as well as some starkly beautiful landscapes.
drying chillies

Drying chillies, using chillies in food, and using them in decoration-it's all part of New Mexico. The people love the little buggers and I would think they would make them their State flower if they could! I like spicy food but I learned that when locals say it isn't hot it's probably a bit hotter than you are used to. So, when in New Mexico you can go with mild and get something pretty tasty.
Secco de Arroyo

This cute little artsy town is not a place you'd normally visit but we were staying at the hostel which is located there so were lucky enough to find it. There are some small cafes and artist shops and though small a place you could hang out and enjoy a quiet afternoon. It is just north of Taos. If you find the hostel, you are there!
Beautiful Cabresto Lake, in the Cuesta, NM area
by scargo
Cabresto Lake, in the Cuesta area, is beautiful. It is above 9.000 feet. If you fly fish you will love it. The lake is also a trailhead for hiking above timberline in the National Wildlife Preserve/Carson National Forest. You can hike to lakes above treeline from here if it is after March-April. NO fish in these lakes! You cannot camp in the Wilderness Area so be prepared to make camp somewhere around the lake.
BTW, the short road going up to Cabresto Lake can be very rutted and rough. If your vehicle is not suited you may have to park at some point below and hike up. If you do, I would not leave anything in the car that would be tempting to the locals. Many are poor and without a real income.
