One such prominant person was Governor Bent who also had a trading fort near La Junta, Colorado. He and his brother were men who facilitated things. (See my page on La Junta, Colorado)
Kit Carson was another citizen of Taos. He was familiar with the Indians and knew the routes west. Be sure and find out his demise.
Do not miss the Taos Pueblo. It is far different that other pueblos in New Mexico, and if you take the free tour (once you pay to get in $10.00 for adults) they will explain how even their dialect is different.
Drive north and cross over the Rio Grande River on the suspension bridge.
Drive up to Eagle's Nest for a beautiful scenic experience.
Taos Ski Area is one of the best.
