The Rio Grande Gorge bridge spans the gorge a few miles outside of Taos.?Turn left at the old blinking light,? can be heard often in these parts. The directions given will take you to the gorge, the bridge, the earthships, the ?mesa? and eventually to Tres Piedras and Chama. The fact there IS no blinking light is immaterial. You have entered Northern New Mexico and things are perhaps a bit different than you are used to here.
The power of the gorge meets the quietness of the mesa. Whether you just park and gaze at the gorge below the bridge or take an easy hike along the rim, this is a lovely area. The rim trailhead begins at the rest area just west of the gorge bridge. Look for a cattle guard and trailhead marker adjoining the rest area parking.
