Travel Tips for Taos

Stop to smell the Indian Paintbrushes!

by rexvaughan

There are many places along the almost deserted roads of this part of New Mexico where you can pull off the road or take a dirt byway to admire the scenery (and there is a lot of it). One thing not to be missed are the wildflowers which can sometimes be seen in profusion and at others in sparse numbers. This little Indian Paintbrush seemed all alone and would have been missed were it not for the brilliant color which beckons any flower lover. The seem to be able to thrive almost anywhere and are a bright spot in areas sometimes lacking in color. Look for them and their cousins.

When visiting Taos Pueblo

by fsayed

Taos Pueblo requests that visitors abide by these rules:
1. Please report, and pay the appropriate fee for, each camera you carry into the Pueblo area.
2. Please respect the "restricted area" signs as they protect the privacy of our residents and the sites of our native religious practices.
3. Do not enter doors that are not clearly marked as curio shops. Each home is privately owned and occupied by a family and is not a museum display to be inspected with curiosity.
4. Please do not photograph members of the tribe without first asking permission.
5. Absolutely no photography in San Geronimo Chapel.
6. Do not enter the walls surrounding the ruins of the old church and our cemetery.
7. Do not wade in the river -- their sole source of drinking water.

San Francisco De Asis church

by leafmcgowan

Established around 1772, this church is one of the most known and photographed of all missions in the American Southwest. Made by the Spanish colonists, this handcrafted real adobe building houses twin bell towers and an arched portal entrance overlooking a enclosed courtyard. Still an active parish, its a must to see when exploring Taos.

Taos Gorge Bridge

by 807Wheaton

This is a good place to stop and stretch for a while on a road trip. This bridge is over the Rio Grande between Arroyo Hondo and Pilar, MN. It provides a beautiful scenic panorama. There are also picnic tables here and small shelters with water.

There is a sign on the bridge that says:
"Most beautiful Steel Bridge" designed by the New Mexico State Highway Commission, 1966.

The High Road to Taos runs...

by talesfromnik

The High Road to Taos runs through some beautiful country and is just a bit longer trip than the Taos Canyon route. It is important to have a MAP or at least print one out from MapQuest.com of MapsOnUs.com. This is also HIGH country (hence the name) so traveling in winter can be hazardous. 4 wheel drive and a careful attitude is advised.

Coming from Santa Fe on 84, you will reach an intersection just before Espanola. There is a large movie theater on the Northeast corner and not much of anything else out there – at least in 2002. Turn right at the intersection heading toward Truchas. In less than a mile you will be turning left making a curve of sorts and end up at a “T” intersection with stoplight. Turn right there and head for Truchas. You might want to stop off at the Chimayo church with the magic dirt (another story) on the way. You wander around through some lovely country and then reach Truchas, a small, low profile artist retreat town. There are studios here that are frequently open. IMPORTANT: it is VERY easy to miss the turn to Taos in Truchas. So keep your eyes open. It is not far after entering town and will be a narrow road to the left. If you end up “in town”, don’t worry; lots of folks do. I am sure the locals are very use to giving directions.

From Truchas you will go through Las Trampas. Eventually you will come to another T in the road and you will turn right. There are good signs here. You are heading to Penasco. Your last turn to get to Taos will be to turn onto 75 going WEST. This is a large horseshoe curvy intersection that takes you onto the last leg of the High Road past Fort Bergwin (excellent free talks there in the summer) and eventually into Ranchos de Taos. Turn right (North) and in about 3 miles you will be at the Visitor’s Center for Taos.
