Very good place to stay

by TripAdvisor Member RayHay

A retro motel from the glory days of historic route 66. This motel is old but very clean and well taken care of. The front desk staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area.

Outstanding place to stay

by TripAdvisor Member OklahomaRedleg

My wife and I stayed at the Blue Swallow and had a wonderful time. If you are looking for all of the perks from todays modern hotels then this is not the place for you. If you want old school charm and a touch of the classic route 66 aura then this is the place for you.

Yes the rooms are small but very clean. My wife and I enjoyed sitting outside our room and enjoying the evening air. Bill (the owner) was very friendly and informative about the hotel. He has installed equipment to make the rotary phones operational again. There are no refrigerators provided in the rooms but there is a "community" refigerator next to the office that is on the honor system. He also has two grills that guests can use if they wish. In the morning I walked to the office and got our fresh brewed coffee from Bill and returned to our room. About 30 minutes later there was Bill knocking on our door bringing us fresh coffee!

What a great experience to stay in this truly classic hotel. As I stated before, it is not a modern hotel but it is a classic hotel

"Tucumcari Tonight!"

We stayed at the Blue Swallow during a roadtrip back back in Sept. 1999 and had been hankering to return ever since. It was a fond memory of vintage cool and authentic Rt.66. Not much was happening in Tucumcari yet the motel was packed with German, French and Japanese tourists all on the hunt for Americana and Rt. 66 lore.

Lucky for us we were passing through Tucumcari again recently, so we made advanced reservations and arrived at the hotel around sunset on a Monday night.

Bill greeted us warmly and by name, as in "you must be Mr. and Mrs. ...." and proudly escorted us to our room at the far end of the property (we have 2 dogs and apparently the end rooms are the "dog rooms"). It was just as I'd remembered it, if not better.

The room is no frills, pretty basic. Clean, cute, with homey quilts on the beds, and a vintage TV cabinet underneath the modern TV. The bathroom was spotless. Interesting curved corners where the ceiling meets the walls, and great tilework in the bathroom. The motel's paint scheme and neon is gorgeous. I think I used up a whole roll of film taking photos of the property and the famous neon sign.

They have chairs outside and a centrally located picnic/sitting area and communal fridge for guests to share-- though we didn't make much use of the outdoors area as weather was rainy.

Each room has its own adjoining garage-Bill opened it for us, though it was too small for our rental car to pull into. Makes me wonder how those big 1950s monsters ever fit into them! (In 1999 we were able to park our vintage VW in one of the garages and we thought that was just about the coolest thing ever).

There is a large vacant grassy lot behind the motel which was a nice bit of scenery out the bathroom window, and also a good place to walk the dogs.

The owners obviously have a great deal of pride and enthusiasm for their motel, and it shows.

The town of Tucumcari is a bit seedy, a lil' scary and rough around the edges. We encountered several hobos and weirdos walking the sidewalks of the town, including one fellow wearing just a pair of swim trunks and oxford shoes. Many of the motels in town haven't been as lovingly tended to at the Blue Swallow. In fact across the street along 66 there is an abandoned motel with thigh-high weeds in the parking lot and feral cats living in empty door-less rooms. I find this fascinating-- though other folks might be alarmed by it.

There are some famous vintage motel and cafe signs nearby--lots of great neon still existing, though the town seems to be less lively and more abandoned/ busted-down since we were there in '99.

Many of the restaurants nearby were closed for the night (or permanently), though "Del's" ("since 1956"), with great neon and a fiberglass cow on the roof was a delightful dinner spot within walking distance to the Blue Swallow. Had a great cheeseburger and really good service. Place and parking lot was packed, always a good sign of quality.

I would recommend Blue Swallow Motel to all. It is an authentic bit of history, very lovingly tended to, and well kept.

A Must Stay in Tucumcari

by TripAdvisor Member Slash7

The Blue Swallow is a true motor court with garages and art-deco neon lights. It is like a time-capsule straight out of the 40’s and 50’s. Bill and Terri are incredible people with a true respect for history. The motel is clean, well-kept and takes on the aura of better days gone by. There are no soft drink machines at the Blue Swallow; Bill keeps an old ice box in the lobby full of cold drinks with a tin can offering the honor system, 50 cents a drink. The phones in the immaculate rooms are the original rotary type. Bill won’t hear of changing anything. Bill photographs all his guests in front of the neon sign in front for posting on his web site and hands out signed post cards to everybody who stays. In the evening, retreat to the courtyard where you can find Bill and Terri visiting and relaxing in one of the original wood or steel lounge chairs.

The lobby is full of nostalgia and interesting photos. Bill and Terri's service, friendship, care and attention will always be remembered and appreciated. This is a must stay for all of you! Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this motel or meet these fabulous people!

Lots of fun

I don't know if it's worth going out of your way for, but if you're traveling along I-40 and Tucumcari is a good stopping point, why not stay here and experience a 1950s Route 66 motel? The owner is full of enthusiasm for the property, and gave us both a good restaurant recommendation (Dean's) and good directions to Taos (the scenic way, through the mountains). Our room was clean and surprisingly quiet at night. We enjoyed our stay.

Best Motel on 66!

by TripAdvisor Member 662LA

You cannot pass through Tucumcari without staying at the Blue Swallow! A friend and I recently took a 66 road trip, and this was all we hoped for (and more) in a Route 66 motel. The comfortable modern amenities and the vintage touches (like rotary dial phones and a classic cigarette machine in the lobby) are a great combination -- it's like staying at your grandma's house. Everything was sparkling clean and very homey. Comfy beds, no smoking, friendly atmosphere, and even a little covered place to park your car. I will definitely stay here again!

Old Route 66: this is a must

by TripAdvisor Member mxp2000

If you are travelling along I-40 and you want to feel back to '50s and taste a little bit of the Old Route 66 ou have to stop here. We booked our stay well in advance via email and Bill and Terri were so kind to block room nr 5 for us! The rooms are very basic and it seems nothing has been changed since the '50s. However everything is very well matained and cleaned.
Everything here is like in the '50-'60s. You have not to look for something elegant or comfortable,.This is not a 5 star hotel, but it is something true that you will really appreciate if you are a fan of that period. This is authentic Old Route 66.

A Trip Back In Time

by TripAdvisor Member calimagna

Aftre reading all about this motel and seeing the films etc we had to stay there.

The new owners have done everything to keep the ledgend alive making you feel like you are back in the 50s with their friendly and trustworthy attitude.

We were shown the neat clean rooms with what appears to be the original Cooler units which were in pristine condition and also shown the rocking chairs outside and also given the opportunity to park the rental car in our own garage one of which is attached to each room.

Not the cheapest place to stay but considering it's real people not a multi million dollar chain running it I say worth it just to keep it going with as it seems Bill the owner and his wife doing all of the maintanence work cleaning etc 24 hrs a day.

Keep up the good work we will be back.

Lived up to our expectations

We were travelling east towards Amarillo, uncertain where to stay and decided to try and find The Blue Swallow - we were successful and not disappointed. Bill is an engaging personality and his wife was very helpful; a great place to stay - take a step back into history - we loved the atmosphere and have no hesitation in recommending.
