Eighth Lake Campground: Sandwiched between lakes

We stayed for three nights in Eighth Lake Campground, which is at the end of the Fulton Chain of Lakes, halfway between Old Forge and Blue Mountain Lake. The campground has over 100 sites, some on the shore of Eighth Lake, some on the shore of seventh; it's a mile walk between the lakes. Showers are a quarter and are across from the Refuse center at the entrance, while bathrooms are spaced every couple of campsites. It's possible to enter the area for day use, though there's a fee for that, too; but if you stay in a state campground, you get free access to other state parks and campgrounds.

Unique Quality: This campground is right between two large lakes, offering easy access to sunset views, swimming, and canoeing. Also, it's a convenient base if you want to explore both the Blue Mountain and Old Forge areas.

Elk Lake Lodge: One of the "Ten Perfect Wilderness Lodges"

Described by National Geographic as "the jewel of the Adirondacks," and one of the "ten perfect wilnderness lodges" in the U.S., the turn-of-the-century lodge is on Elk Lake -- a 12,000-acre wilderness resort in the heart of the High Peaks.

Around the lodge are 40 miles of private trails, two lakes offering canoeing, swimming and fishing for trout or landlocked salmon and swimming in perfectly clear waters.

Unique Quality: The main lodge is stunning! Built in 1904, it is a typical rustic Adirondack structure featuring a large fieldstone fireplace with Adirondack and Craft Movement furniture. The lodge offers six comfortable rooms, each with twin beds and private bath. Eight private cottages nearby all have mountain and lake views. Cottages vary in size, offering seclusion for one couple or larger groups. Each has a
living room and modern bath. Some of them have kitchens and fireplaces.

The Saranac Hotel: Downtown Saranac Lake

I'll say that right off the bat, this place has always looked a little creepy to me. AN old brick building seemingly straight from the turn-of-the century. However, friends who have stayed here say it's not at all bad -- especially for the relatively cheap price (less than $100) for a double room.

The Hotel Saranac also happens to be run by Paul Smith's College's hospitality management students (located down the road on Lower St. Regis Lake).

Unique Quality: Perhaps in an attmpet ot make the towns' Cure patients feel like they had traveled to Europe for a Cure, the Grand Hall on the second floor is a replica of the foyer of the Davanzati Palace in Florence!

By the way, pets are actually allowed at this hotel, so if you're hoping to hike with your dogs, go for it!

Ted's Cabin: A Rental on an Unforgettable Lake

We live on one of the lakes that adjoins to this lovely lake and have seen this tiny cabin many times in the past year on boat excursions.

Ted's cabin is nestled among many of the most famous Great Camps of the Adirdonacks, includign the world famous former camp of Marjorie Merriweather Post: TopRidge. As long as you won't feel overshadowed by the Great Camps, you should love this rustic studio cottage for two!

The cabin is one of many homes on the lake that is accessible only by boat, but do not worry: Water taxi service is provded with the rental if you don't want to launch your own craft! The cabin has a canoe included for exploring the St. Regis Lakes Chain and Canoe Wilderness, which is a part of this chain of lakes (Lower St. Regis, Spitfire and Upper St. Regis).

Unique Quality: You are on your own private island with lean-to and firepit; lakeside St. Regis Mountain Trail dock. You can swim in the pristine waters of this lake and watch the famous "Idem Racing Sloops" on their regular Sunday in August regattas. (See also my tip on the Adirodnack Museum). Hike Adirondack Park Trails literally out your kitchen door! Telephone, hot shower, full-size refrigerator/freezer.

I can only speak for a friend who rented it, that shewere extremely satsified with their experience. The rates are about $1,500 a week in high season and the cabin is inaccessible during off-seasons.

Lake Placid Lodge: My Personal Favorite!

Part of the wonderful Relais & Chateaux chain of hotels, the Lake Placid Lodge is a truly extraordinary place to stay, sited on the west bank of Lake Placid, with stone fireplaces in every room, caring service and an excellent restaurant!

This is not the place to bring young kids, nor is it ideal for rowdys adults. It is, however, perfect for a romantic weekend in the country.

Unique Quality: Close to hiking, skiing, canoeing and cultural draws in the Lake Placid region. At the lodge itself, you can choose private cabins or rooms in the main lodge. Whatever the chioce, it will be excellent!

Weebawk Inn: High Peaks Luxury

Do you want to experience the glamour of a real turn-of-the-century Great Camp? You can if you shell out the money and pay for a weekend at the Wawbeek. The Wawbeek is a relaxing, get away from it all, place on Upper Saranac Lake, perfectly suited in style for its location!

It's absolutely gorgeous architecture and ideal location on beautiful and peaceful Upper Saranac Lake are the two main draws, although it's also within minutes of many terrific hiking trails in the high peaks region, as well as downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter months.

The property is 40 acres on the lake, which cannot be beat, but the interior is luxurious as well. Abundant fireplaces and cozy nooks make it the perfect place to curl up with your favorite book and if you're in a gaming mood, checker boards and playing cards await in each Great Room.

Unique Quality: The restaurant is excellent too!

Bark Eater's Inn: Near the Best Hiking Trails

The Bark Eater Inn in Keene was once a stagecoach stopover for guests traveling from the Lake Champlain Region to Lake Placid.

Guests can stay in the 150-year-old farmhouse, where seven bedrooms share baths. For a private bath, book a room in the carriage house or the two cottages.

Unique Quality: The Inn's terrific breakfasts are designed to fill hungry hikers preparing for a long day in the mountains. YOu won't leave the table disappointed.

Schroon Lake B&B: B&B with a Mobster History

About an hour south of Lake Placid is the old Schroon Lake B&B, where you can stay for more reasonable rates than many lodges -- and even B&B's -- right in the heart of the High Peaks region.

The small property is snuggled in the foothills of the High Peaks region and was a hot spot during prohibition and popular with mobsters.

For those who have read the book, tt was even featured in the touching memoir "Borrowed Finery" by Paula Fox, set during this period of Prohibition!

Unique Quality: It's now a relaxing place with great views of the surrounding mountains.

Adirondack Loj: In the heart of the High Peaks region

The Adirondack Loj is in a superb location. It rests on a lake in the middle of the High Peaks region of the state park. People who enjoy the great outdoors will like it here. The room I was in was a large bunkroom that held a little over a dozen people. People from all directions come here. In my opinion, this is a suitable establishment for families. There is a meal option here too. Bathrooms are down the hall, and the rooms are nice and cozy at night. It is an excellent base for hiking into the wilderness. There are trails for all skill levels. Some people come just to relax by the lake.

Note: If you do have a reservation at the Loj, you do not need to pay for parking. The Loj will give you a parking pass. There are also some campgrounds on the property.

Unique Quality: It is in a nice setting. You are right by a lake and some trailheads that go into the heart of the mountains. Since this is the launching point for a hike to the heights of New York, this is a popular place. Plan ahead if you can.
