I will be taking a train from NYC (Penn Station) to ALbany. I then need to go to the airport to pick up a rental car. How far is it from the train station to the airport?
You can answer that question for yourself using Google Maps.
Just right-click on the train station and then click on 'directions from here'
Then go to the airport and follow the same steps only click on 'directions to here'.
If you are talking about Rensselear Station and the International Airport, the answer is about 13-14 miles.
Do you really have to go to the airport? There are closer car rental locations.

I know that Amtrak and Hertz do this, because they offered us the same deal two years ago in Charleston, SC, since the train station is not near anything. Also note that confusion on whether there is a Hertz desk at the train station - this answer also fit the situation in SC...

One word of caution,My husband travelled from NYC to Albany by train and he found the Amtrack very unreliable.the train was delayed and there was no official announcement and no one knew when he train would arrive or how long the delay was or the cause of the delay.Many others later told us that Amtrak trains are not reliable at all.

Yes, Amtrak in many parts of the country runs on track owned by freight companies, so delays are common (the Northeast corridor is the exception but that does not include Albany).
Look at

and look on the right under Routes. These are the various routes that serve Albany. Do you know which train you were thinking of taking?

When renting a car, in most cases the Airport is the last place you would want to rent one if it is possible. There are almost always extra fees and taxes on Airport rentals. I saved $445 on a monthly rental in Phoenix. And the taxi round trip from airport to agency was $48.
The urban renewal in Albany begins almost on the front steps of the state capitol building. Girded on its right hand by classical state department buildings and running a few hundred yards from the front steps, the civic Meeting Center ("the Egg"), the uniform Agency towers (23-story skyrises) and the Cultural Education Center are but few of the structures on the immaculately-planned and constructed Empire State Plaza.
Another photo of the NY State Education Building, that started its life in 1912 as home to the New York State Library. Designed by Henry Hornbostel, and built between 1908-12, the prominant feature of the structure is its 36 fluted pillars of marble from Danby, Vermont. These huge columns are 90 feet tall and 6.5 feet in diameter at their base. In 1978 the library was moved to a new building specially designed for better preservation of the numerous artifacts in the library collection.
