I have a flight coming into Albany after midnight. The car rental companies are closed after that time and most hotels don't have shuttles running that late.
Can anyone tell me what the closest hotels are to the airport are so I can save on cab fare?

Put hotels albany and it wil tell you how far and shuttle etc
There are several very close. The Wingate is good and close and they may send their shuttle over to get you if you make a reservation there and give them your flight information. I know they run it very early - 5am - so they may run it late as well on request for guests. Actually any of the nearby large Hotels - Hiton Garden, the Desmond or the Holiday Inn Turf might send a shuttle over after hours if you have a reservation. If you don't get anywhere with the hotel, the airport has a new exclusive contract with Capitaland Taxis who sit outside the baggage claim and will take you to any of the close hotels for a $5.00 minium charge + $1.00 surcharge for pickup after 6pm and .20 per 1/10 mile.
Albany's Cultural Education Center opposes the state capitol building on the Empire State Plaza, but at such a distance that the two can scarcely be viewed from the same perspective. Today's Center is a smaller, modern building set off from the row of much-taller agency buildings, in appearance looking like several stories pancaking a helpless ground floor of classical arches. Behind its misbalanced layers you'll find a library, an archives and a museum.
From October through May, Capital Rep puts on quality theatre in an intimate setting. This is a professional theater in the League of Regional Theatres (LORT), which means the talent and the creative artists are a cut above. The theater space is relatively small and the stage is a thrust (seating on three sides), so you get to feel very close to the production no matter where you sit. It's a wonderful feeling!
Both plays and musicals are produced here.
Spend an evening downtown at the theatre and then head next door to the Bayou Cafe to relax at the bar (or eat an affordable dinner there beforehand).

I was used to seeing a trashy-looking place as I went by by bus or train (what's called the Albany station on the train isn't even really Albany). It was a surprise to get out here and find some impressive architecture and a nice riverfront.
