Binghamton is very diverse. Some sections of the town are upscale, well-kept-up and other areas are downright dirty with litter and broken windows and cracked pavement. There are a vast range of neighborhoods to visit in Binghamton.
The present areas designated as neighborhoods are:
CENTER CITY.... railroad tracks south to North Shore Drive
EAST SIDE.... railroad tracks east to Bigelow Street
FIRST WARD/ELY PARK.... Clinton Street region
NORTH SIDE.... around Chenago Street
SOUTHSIDE EAST... centered on Saratoga Heights and Felters Road
SOUTHSIDE WEST... Corbett Avenue
WEST SIDE... by Riverside Drive
The city in general is trying to help the neighborhoods to clean themselves and improve their environment.
Center City Coordination (C3) Program, EBBA (Eastside Better Business Association), First Ward Association, The River Crawl, The SouthSide Project, West Side Festival are all city sponsored/supported community efforts for general improvements.
Finch Hollow Nature Center

If you are looking for a nice walk, a place to take the kids to learn about nature, or want a place to have a picnic, try Finch Hollow. There is a small Natural History center/museum with people who will answer questions. THere is also an easy walk of about 1 mile which takes you through a field, over a stream, around a pond, through a pine forest, and over a dam. There is a bit of a hill to start and finish, but other than that, it's fairly flat. There are a couple small muddy areas (plan on mud even a few days after a heavy rain!) and one place where you have to get across the a stream - they do have rocks strategically placed, but 1 was missing (or they weren't done??) so it got a little wet! THe trails are open during daylight hours; the museum is open set hours so call before you go. Dogs are allowed in the park as long as they are leashed. Picnic tables are by the main building.
Finch Hollow is at 1394 Oakdale Road, about 2 miles from the Oakdale Mall. 729-4231.

This restaurant is about as upscale as you can get in Binghamton. The food is excellent, as is the service. There are 2 levels to this - the first floor has the bar and tables, and tends to be a little bit more casual. The 2nd floor has just tables. The regular menu is pricey, but the food is worth it. The bar menu also has good food, but is much more affordable.
The first Thursday of every month, they do a lady's night, and do some other theme nights occasionally, too.
The restaurant is located in an old firehouse. It has unique decor and even the original fire pole still in place. The barbecue sandwich is good, and the cobb salad is to die for!
The bartenders are particularly good at coming up with new drinks if you tell them the sort of thing you like.
Save room for desert!
