Subway from Williamsburg Area to Brooklyn Bridge
by sconi
Will be at the Vintage Motorcycle Show (14th & Wythe) in August (taking the 'L' train from Manhattan). Afterwards, from 14th & Wythe, would like to get to the Brooklyn Bridge area to walk over the bridge back to Manhattan. Appears to be about 4-5 miles. Is it safe to walk that distance from 14th & Wythe? If so, best route? Secondly, it appears that we could take a subway (G train to Hoyt/Schermerhorn and then the A train to High St) - would that make more sense?
Thanks!

take the subway. if you wish to see the neighborhoods you are passing through, there is a B62 bus about a block or two away at 15th and norman that takes about the same amount of time but leaves you with a shorter walk to the bridge. not so wonderful to walk thru these areas.

Travel Tips for Brooklyn
Fort Tilden Free Concerts
by PA2AKgirl
In the summer, on Sunday evenings, Gateway National Recreation Area hosts free concerts at Fort Tilden (right across the Marine Parkway Bridge in Queens) People bring their lawn chairs, blankets and coolers to enjoy the shows. Mostly, it's an older crowd but the music is still pretty decent. Also, afterwards, you can take a short walk to the Riis Park to the beach, which is open until midnight, I think. Unfortunately, I didn't get to attend a lot of these because the evening ferry tours down to the statue of liberty were at the same time and I was giving that program. However, the few times I did get to go, it was always pretty enjoyable. Of course, my house was about 100 feet away, so I didn't have to deal with the lines for restrooms.
Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven)
by penpoison
This invasive species from China has quickly taken over the urban environment. Some people consider it a threat to the native species of the area. But this famous tree, is also the famous tree immortalized in the book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Another tree species that some consider a threat is the Norway maple which is a fast growing maple compared to the slow Sugar maple which is the state tree for New York.
Naval Commandant's House
by saw50st8
Nestled right on the water in Vinegar Hill, the Naval Commandant's house is visible behind a locked gate. Although you cannot go up to the house, drive by to see it. It was built between 1805 and 1806 and is purportedly the design of Boston's Charles Bulfinch. Bulfinch designed the U.S. Capitol Building as well as Faneuil Hall and the State House in Boston.
Located on Little Street in Vinegar Hill
Coming to Brooklyn?
by feline01
The two best ways to get around Brooklyn, specifically, Coney Island is The Cyclone and The Wonder Wheel. The Cyclone is a 75-year old (as of 2002) wooden roller coaster. It costs $5 per ride and you can re-ride without getting on line again for $4. In my opinion, the best roller coaster ride anywhere. As you head up the first very steep hill, you overlook the Atlantic Ocean and to your right, the Verrazano Bridge, one of the world's longest suspension bridges. Breathtaking. The Wonder Wheel is the world's only giant ferris wheel that gives you a choice of stationary or rocking compartments. The rocking ones are on tracks that slide back and forth as the ferris wheel turns. Costs $4 for 2 turns around.
But, of course, if you are not looking to get around like that, you can always take the subway, bus or drive across the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge. Or if coming from Staten Island and places south, the outstanding Verazzano Bridge is a real treat. Catch the Belt Parkway from the Verazzano to be whisked away to Coney Island/Brighton Beach or even better, JFK Airport to go someplace even more exotic.
Thai

Really liked the decor. Pale green walls, white booths and back lighting make for a relaxing meal.
They have a box lunch that looks great.
$7.95 One entree, 3 appetizers, rice and soup or salad. Noodle Mao - Very good. Light and flavorful.
Pad Thai Rice Noodles - Great flavor but is too rich to eat the huge portion they give you.
Tom Yum Soup - Clear broth soup with a kick. Lots of veges.
