Is this Brooklyn neighborhood safe?

by nytourist

I'm planning to rent a place in Brooklyn and here's the intersection: Willoughby Avenue and Dekalb Avenue.
Would like to find out more about this neighborhood and the surrounding ones. Are they safe? What time should one not be found on the streets? Are they open to Asians being in the community? Thanks!

I think Willoughby Avenue and Dekalb Avenue run parallel to eachother.. Unless there are other streets with the same name.. maybe they bump into eachother.. Anyway, as I'm not sure exactly where the house is, I can't stay... In general the area is sort of bordering between ghetto and uber trendy hispter play land (haha). I feel like that area is safe and fine, but, as I can't picture where it is exactly, don't take my word for it.

sounds like Fort Greene area

by softbomb

fort Greene area is up and coming. Not as nice as say nearby Park Slope(which is one of the jewels of Brooklyn), but it has a lot of amenities. you are close to the BAM which has movies, plays, dance and concerts. Plus lots of great restaurants are close. As far as being Asian, this is New York -it's a melting pot. Nobody cares, esp the area you are looking at.

it could either be fort greene or the clinton hill area depending on the street. willoughby & dekalb do run parallel to each other.

depending on location you could either be close to fort greene park, bam and downtown brooklyn or you could be closer to the pratt institute area. both areas are fine to walk around. just use caution as in all major city areas. the only problem in clinton hill area is taking the G train which can run SLOW.
both areas having a growing number of bars and restaurants.

in terms of ethnicity, no one really cares as slowbomb mentions in the previous post. this is after all new york city.

Travel Tips for Brooklyn

The Picnic House

by Nathalie_B

Once you've seen or maybe even visied the Litchfield Villa walk down hill back to the Park and you'll find yourself infront of the Picnic House. This place provides you with nice tabels for a picnic, restrooms and it is available for private events too. By the way, you can find there a soda vending machine as well, in case you're thirsty.
To get there take the "F" train to the 7th Avenue station.

Beer Lovers: Check the Technique

by twohandgrab

Brooklyn Brewery is located in the heart of Williamsburg and they offer tours and tastings on Fridays and Saturdays. They run a fierce operation and it is undoubtedly the best local beer. They have a great NY history lesson that is worth the tour, so put one back for Brooklyn! (Can you really say no to free beer?) 'L' train to Bedford, walk from 7th to 11th and take a left. Walk to Whythe.

A Relaxing Wine Bar with an Ocean View

by cjg1 about Vines (Caribbean Princess)

Vines is the wine bar aboard the Caribbean Princess. The wine bar is located off of the Piazza on Deck 5. There are plenty of seats at the bar as well as bar tables and window seats with beautiful ocean views.

They offer a nice selction of red, white and rose wines as well as champagne. The bar also offers a nice selction of Tapas items such as olives, cheeses assorted meats, fruit and breads. Wine tastings and seminars are offered here as well.

My wife and I often came here during the day when we were at sea (not in port) to read by the window and enjoy a nice glass of wine. Vines became a nice spot to grab a glass of wine or champagne before or after dinner. Smart casual to elegant attire.

Heights Cafe

by Gypsystravels about Heights Cafe

This is a nice restaurant located on the busy Montague Street. The café is usually busy with locals sipping a glass of wine or hanging out at the bar. They have a large dining area behind the bar and in the summer you can enjoy dining al fresco when they open up the area. It’s a great way to enjoy your meal and watch the world pass you by. The service is excellent and very attentive. During my last visit Ferni and I decided to both order the charbroiled burger. I ordered my cheddar burger medium well, sautéed onions and no bun. The burger comes with a side of very tasty fries. The burger was excellent. Very tasty, cooked to my liking The only thing I would say I didn’t care too much for was the ketchup!!! It was way too salty!!

Pacifico on Pacific

by jglsongs about Pacifico

Set back along Pacific St. in Boerum Hill, you will not feel like you're in the city; sitting down and having a meal, you'll know you're in a culinary city with skilled chefs. Pacifico has a great atmosphere (especially in winter when the fireplace is roaring) and amazing food. Bring cash, since there's no plastico at Pacifico. You can't go wrong with anything; the stuffed chile rellenos are like nothing you'd imagine. Even the (homemade) chips and salsa are great.
