Cheap accomodation in Buffalo

by Christianzagar

I'm going to be getting in to buffalo airport just before midnight and can't decide whether to take the bus directly to Toronto or to spend the night as I would be getting to Toronto at an awful hour in the morning when no one would come pick me up!

anyways I was wondering if there was any truly budget accomodation that had single rooms. I checked out the hostel but I don't want to sleep in a dorm.. If anyone has any experience in a backpackers or guesthouse please let me know!
thanks
Christian

Will you have a car? Unless you do, what you spend on a taxi to get Downtown or elsewhere will make it worthwhile to stay at the airport. Last bus leaves the airport just after midnight, so you can try to make it. There's really nothing cheap Downtown except the hostel though.
There's a decent Red Roof on the north side of town that's fairly cheap. I stayed there last year. You'd need a car though.

Travel Tips for Buffalo

My visit was primarily to Niagara Falls area and also to the area east of Buffalo, and due south of Rochester. It was in this region of the Genesee River that I discovered one of the most scenic and beautiful state parks I've ever been to in the entire country. It's called Letchworth State Park and it is approximately 17 miles in length and several miles wide. It also boasts in my opinion some of the most beautiful waterfall settings that you can gain access to without special climbing gear or equiptment.Excellent for exploring, hiking and photography.

Attention to Detail

The facade of the Guaranty Building in Buffalo is covered with Louis Sullivan's trade marked patterned terra cotta. The design is incredibly ornate yet very elegant. The natural themes and flowing lines are clearly Art Nouveau. While details may be lost on the upper floors, close examination at street level is a must.

A winter visit:

by Herkbert

If you're visiting Buffalo during the winter, you'll want to make sure that you pack gloves, a scarf, and a sweater or two. I'll just assume that you'll know to wear a warm coat or jacket and boots. We do get snow and it can be snowy, but there are plenty of sunny days in the winter when a sweater and fleece will keep you warm. Sunglasses. Summer or winter, sunglasses are a necessity. Summer is obvious, but in the winter, the sun does reflect off the bright white snow.

Spooky places

Two Buffalo locations have been featured on the "Ghost Hunters" television show - Iron Island Museum and the Central Terminal. If your tastes (or beliefs) run a little paranormal, you might want to check them out.

The Iron Island Museum is a quirky little museum located in a building that once housed a church and a funeral home. Iron Island is a nickname for the area that the museum is located in due to all the surrounding railroad tracks.

The Central Terminal was the place to be when Buffalo was in its haydays if you were arriving or departing by train. It's an art deco structure that was left to deteriorate for a long time as passenger travel slowed. The Central Terminal can be seen from a distance as you approach the city.

Supposed Haunting
USS Sullivans
Naval Servicemen’s Park

During World War Two, five brothers in the navy were stationed on the USS Juneau. When the ship sank, all five brothers perished to a water grave. Some time later, the Navy commissioned the USS Sullivans. The ship was mothballed and later brought to Buffalo, New York for permanent residence. It is said that George Sullivan roams about below the docks looking for his brothers who were trapped below the Juneau when it sank.
