There to please

I recently coordinated a trip for 12 golfers from my Country Club for a two day golf trip to the Villa Roma

I was totally amazed at the cooperation of the entire staff to make our stay most enjoyable. Everything we asked for was provided as promised, and it seemed like they were there to provide for the guest's every need.

As an example, we had early tee times on the second day starting at 8:30, which was the same time that breakfast began in the Main Dining Room, we were therefore to be provided with vouchers for the breakfast buffet at the Golf Club, but the Dining Room Manager said that that would not be necessary, as he would provide staff for us to have our breakfast at the Main Dining Room at 7:45 and guaranteed that we would be out by 8:15 to make our first tee time. All 12 players received their breakfast as ordered and we were out of the Dining Room by 8:15

When we arrived at the Golf Club, our bags were on the golf carts and we were ready to proceed to the first hole.

I would recommend the Villa Roma to any golf groups who want good food, good accomodations, and want to be treated by a staff that is "There to Please".

Perfect Wedding

by A TripAdvisor Member

I just read the comments titled "Wedding from Hell" posted on July 5, 2005 and am in shock.
My wedding was at the Villa Roma on May 14, 2005 and our friends and family are still talking about how wonderful everything was.
Everyone made a weekend out of it, ( I will agree, the hotel does need to do some upgrading) other then the rooms looking a little out of date, the resort treated all our guests great. We had them hand out gift bags to everyone when then checked in, and everyone got theres as planned.
on the day of the wedding we had our hair done off site (at a salon recomended to me by Jill) (Jill is the evernt planner at the Club at Villa Roma) and our make-up done at the Villa. Doing trial runs with both before hand and everything worked out perfect.
The reception went off FLAWLESS, the room looked great and the food and service was much better then we expected. Like I said before, all our friends and family are still talking about how much they loved the food and how the staff on hand was so accommodating.
It sounds to me like the person who wrote the wedding from hell needs to talk to the bride and see how well she planned or did not plan her wedding.
My suggestion to anyone thinking about having their wedding at the Clubb at the Villa Roma is to do it.
Your memories will be wonderful !!!!!

You Call This Place A resort

The Villa Roma Resort had to have been built in Roman Times. I must tell you that this property has the audacity to consider itself a resort. I stayed at the Villa on 12/30/05 and had planned to stay at least 3 nights but left the following morning as quickly as I could. Upon our arrival we checked in with no problems, as we approached our room area room 245 we smelled paint in the hallway and the corridor was filled with dust and sawdust and just gave a filthy appearance. I told our bellman to stay put because I wanted to see if we could be moved to another room. The front desk was able to offer another room of which I was informed was of the newer variety room 114. When I got to the new room the toilet had some foreign substance on the seat and the toilet seat was so scratched you wondered as to how they can't afford to replace it. The window was wide open and the room was cold I looked into the closet and also found cheap wire hangers mind you that this Villa was charging me a nightly rate of over $450 per night. The furniture in this newer room had to of been furniture they purchased from the Salvation Army. The door of this room looked like a dog had been chewing on it. At this point I went back to the front desk and told them of my displeasure once again. The front desk people I might add are very nice and they must be accustomed to dealing with such complaints from their guests who feel that they have been taken to the cleaners. Mind you I brought my two little girls for a great getaway weekend and we were so terribly disappointed. Once again we moved to another room this area of the Villa is called the Lodge and is located away from the main building. Upon entering our new room we smelled smoke and outside the room the corridors had a musty smell and when we enetered the Lodge we witnessed a mattress standing in the hall we'll come back to that mattress later. The room appeared clean and the closet had wooden hangers for a change. Most resorts I have ever stayed at for the same or lesser price that I was being charged afforded a laundry plastic bag in the closet and to our chagrin their wasn't one. In addition we found plastic cups in our $459 a nite lodging instead of water glasses. My girls and I now decided that we should give the dining room a try we said to ourselves just maybe if the food is good we will stay. Upon entering the Ancient Villa's Dining facilities we were not impressed with the old banquet style seating and banquet style chairs. The maitre D' seated us at a table for 10 people when we were only a party of 3. Upon sitting at our table we couldn't help but notice how poor of a presentation was made of their salad offering which consisted of a help yourself bowl of mixed greens. When we sat down we thought that we would receive some sort of service we had to pour our own water the waiters name was Germain and he really didn't move to provide any service unless we asked him for it. We picked up the menus and were hopeful that we would get excited about the menu. When my daughters picked up the menus they were greeted with sour cream on their hands as the busboy wasn't carefull in how he laid them on the table. The dressing for the salad was left in a bowl and looked very unappetizing. My children ordered the orzo and pasta and chicken parmagiana and I had the eggplant appetizer served with ritz crackers, pasta and roast pork. I must tell you the presentation and taste of all of the above was lousy and we are not accustomed to receiving cafeteria style food not for the prices that they were charging. After dinner I went to the front desk and told them that I would be checking out in the morning and that I wanted to speak to the manager and discuss the experience of which I have had in only 2 hours since my arrival at the so called beatiful Villa Roma Resort. The front desk advised me that they would adjust and reduce my nighty rate to $302 and although I appreciated the gesture told the clerk that I would need a much greater reduction in the daily charge for even considering to stay beyond one night. At this point I was so disgusted and we went back to our room so that I could prepare the girls to take a swim in the Villa's pool. The pool was not overcrowded and my girls seemed to be enjoying themselves. Upon our departure of the pool the girls needed towels and the towels of which I returned with were not even big enough to suffice for a 8 year old girl in fact she needed 2 towels to dry herself. The towels weren't big enough for tiny tim. At this point I decided that we should investigate the kids program of which is included in the price and of which is $15 per child for time share guests. We proceeded to the kids camp area and were told that their was a kaoroke party going on and when we arrived at the room where it was being held I was about to register my girls for the party but I couldn't hear myself think because the music was so loud and their were boys who were under no supervision who were very unruly and decided to take my girls with me in lieu of the poor supervision. At this point in time their wasn't much time left and we decided to visit the bowling alley. Upon entering the bowling alley we were told by the attendant that they were closed the time was 10:30PM and the schedule said that they were open till 11:00PM. The attendent said that they have to shut down at 10:40PM so that they can complete their paperwork. Pleaded with the attendant so that the girls could have the opportunity to bowl for 15 minutes. The attendant allowed us to bowl and we were grateful that we could bowl but I couldn't understand why I had to plead with them when the schedule clearly states 11:00PM. Just a point of reference prior to bowling inquired about the entertainment but sign indicated that the entertainment would not be appropriate for younger children. By the way the bowling alley was very outdated. Most children under 10 don't know how to keep score and it would be nice to have a automated scoring table. At last we decided to go to bed and at this point were sure that we would check out earlier than expected. When we got to our room we settled in and hoped that we would be able to either get a pay per view movie or a hbo channel much to my chagrin the resort had neither. Most resorts for the price of $459 per night would have a VCR, DVD, HBO and Pay Per View Movies but the lovely Villa Roma had none. In addition to the fact that the television was 20 years old the bathroom amenities offered were of the cheapest variety that you could find and not fitting of a resort and the towels like the towels at the pool were of poor quality. Additionally the guest book in the room had ripped pages, missing pages, and stained pages it is difficult to understand how this resort can miss so many details to improving the guest experience. Please also note that all marketing materials of which are distributed internally at the Villa truly reflect a poor image and are not indicative of high quality products and services. Now the most irritating part of the Villa Roma experience. As soon as I laid on the bed I knew that I would suffer a poor nights rest as the bed was extremely soft and I no longer wanted to deal with this Villa but only wanted to make a fast getaway. The Villa Roma is a property that should be condemmed it is not situated in any scenic location in fact the location has no scenic value whatsoever. The location of the Villa is amongst many other buildings with no beauty at all. It is a crying shame that the Villa Roma be considered a resort property and if their is anyone with any sense of price value they will certainly stay clear of the Villa Roma and I will most definately tell all I know how teriible a property the Villa Roma is and how disapointed I was in the accomadations and the amount of money I paid for such a lousy experience. I could have stayed in a Holiday Inn at home for $89.00 with an indoor pool and treated my girls to a local 5 Star Restaurant for less than the price charged for staying at such a decrepit property. If anyone is from Long Island or NYC do yourself a favor if you too are unsure to stay when you first arrive at the Villa Roma think only for a minute and leave as quickly as you can.

In the US, tipping is a long-established fact of life and many people in jobs that involve serving the general public rely on tips to make up a large proportion of their wages. How much you tip is entirely up to you, but a general rule in a restaurant or coffee shop is to leave the person who served you 15-20% of the total bill. Do not leave a tip at any outlet where you serve yourself or where the food is sold to be taken away. After a taxi ride, it is customary to tip the driver around 15-20% of the fare. The amount need not be exact, however, most people(if the amount works out within reason)allow the driver to keep the change as they pay for the fare.

by b1bob about Books a Million

I don't know if there are a million books in each store, but I guess it could be done given the area most of them occupy. You can either buy the books at their regular store or online. If the book you want isn't there, they can probably back order it for you. Books, what else? The last time there, I got a new and greatly improved English-Portuguese dictionary. Well, there is a coffee shop, Joe Muggs, inside all their stores. Mark and I had breakfast there on the way from Charlotte down to Columbia. Surprisingly enough, the capuccino brownie kept me full for much of that morning. The coffee is rubbish, though. Joe Muggs is a blatant knockoff of Starbuck's. Judging by the shopping centres at which these stores are often found, it leans upscale, but the price isn't excessive.

This resort needs serious renovating

This past August we took our 2 boys to Villa Roma. Our sons had been there on a ski trip in the past. Before allowing them to go on the trip we checked their website out and the pictures looked like a very nice place. They were 12 and 13 when they went and had a great time. When looking for a place to take them I remembered it was an all season resort. We made our reservations via the phone and were told that the room we wanted might be filled but that we would be "upgraded" when we got there. When we got there the place was mobbed. The outdoor swimming pool was standing room only, there was no nearby parking we had to trudge through a hot parking lot filled with potholes dragging our luggage with us. At the guest check-in we waited patiently for quite a long time while they tried to accomodate a disgrunted guest. When we finally got our room we were told we had to carry our luggage up the stairs to get there. When we got to the room it had 2 double beds but it was tiny. The bathroom had a pile of towels on the floor and the smoke detector had a paper towel taped over it and it smelled like smoke (it was a non-smoking room). We immediately went back to the desk and informed them that the room we were given was unacceptable that in fact I have never stayed in such an old dirty room in all the years that I have traveled. This resort is in serious need of updating. I explained that I was told I would be "upgraded" when we arrived and they informed me that I was. They apologized and said that they were at full capcity because of a large family reunion staying there. They told us they did have 1 room they could give us and that if that was not up to our standards that they would put us in one of the outside timeshares. We took the key for the inside room and went to check it out. It just happened to be connected to the room that we refused to stay in. This room had a living room, kitchenette, table and chairs. The sofa was a pull out sofabed. We checked the bedroom which had a full or queen size bed. The room was very old and dated the formica was peeling and the main area smelled from smoke (these were non smoking rooms). Both rooms felt old and dirty. Certainly not worth the several hundred dollars per night that we were charged. It was getting late and we were tired so rather than asking to see the outside room we decided that we would stay there so that the boys could go to the game room. The rest of the resort was ok. The dining room experience was ok and the food was pretty good although the people we were seated with seemed to have a problem getting what they asked for from the forgetful waiter. I did not care for the hawking of costume jewelry in the lobby. We went to the bowling alley which was very old. We had to keep score by hand. The next morning we went to the pool. Luckily the family reunion was over and we were able to get a lounge chair. We had lunch at the outdoor restaurant/snackbar. The food was expensive and not very good. There were alot of flies in there too. Hindsite tells me the reason our boys liked it the first time they went was because they were basically on their own with a group from school of about 60 kids. They had their own rooms, could wander anywhere inside the resort they wanted and spent the whole time in the very large game room/arcade. I would not recommend this place. there are many other places that are much nicer.

Leaving airport during stop-over. Restrictions?

by jon_and_may

On the way back from Lihue, Hawaii, I will be making a 3 hour stop-over in L.A. (Terminal 4). I have some friends in Orange County I would love to meet for breakfast during that time, but nor sure if it'll be possible.

Is it possible to leave the airport during my stop? Are there any technicalities I should be aware of? Will me being a Canadian citizen pose problems if I do that?

Any input appreciated!

- Jon.

a 3 hour layover wont be enough.
you will have to do the whole security procedure twice then and that will leave next to no time outside the airport.

You can do it if you have them meet you inside the arrival hall after you go through Passport Control and Customs. It'll be much easier if your bags are checked through back to Canada so you don't have to deal with them. Find a restaurant somewhere in the airport for your visit.

Re: Re: Leaving airport during stop-over. Restrictions?

I wasn't thinking of driving down to visit them. They volunteered to meet me at the airport. But I guess all of this depends on how long a security check takes. How long would a security check take at LAX anyway?

I guess I should play it safe and not bother. It'd be worse to miss the flight home. ;)

Thanks for the reply.

- Jon.

Though Lee, if they're coming back from Hawaii then they won't be going through any security the first time, will they? And when heading back to Canada (I assume) it will only be the regular security, not the Customs, which will be back in Canada.

But my suggestion would be to insist that your friends meet you at the airport and go to a coffee shop there.

3 hours are more then enough. You´ll have time after the breakfast to visit the Grand Canyon and also for a little gambling in one of the casinos in Las Vegas.

I bet it will be a pleasure and a highlight for all the other passengers to wait for U!

Security check at LAX? UGH! It wasn't bad when I went through in March but annoying enough to frustrate one.

Re: Re: Leaving airport during stop-over. Restrictions?

I think you'd be able to have breakfast. I had a stopover in LAX going from Fiji to Amsterdam, and I definetily wanted to get out of the airport. You'll just have to make it a relatively quick breakfast, I guess.

Tell them to meet you at Encounters a great restaurant right at the airport. I think they are open for breakfast.
