Travel Tips for Canandaigua

communities

by davecallahan

Canandaigua has changed greatly since its village status in the 1790s. It has grown and incorporated several communities in the township.

Some of the communities are:
part of Academy... village on route 21 south of Canandaigua
Arsenal Hill... hamlet west of Canandaigua

Deer on Parade

by shrimp56

Zurich and Chicago had their cows, Naperville their farm animals, Toronto their moose -- now Canadaigua has its deer. This one is entitled "Keep America Rolling" and was outside the Randall Farnsworth Auto dealership on the main road into town.

Ontario County Fair

by davecallahan

The Ontario County Fair is a huge event taking over five days of demonstrations, contest, entertainment and amusements. It is located on route 10 just east of the town. Take route 332 (Main Street) to route 4 (Ontario Street) and go east a mile or two to route 10. see the signs there.

The fair is usually the last week of July and combines a horse show, with a tractor pull and 4-H club exhibits, with demolition derby, with carnival rides and side shows. There are arts/crafts tents with items for sale; plenty of food vendors selling their wares; off-tack vehicle races and horse strength contests.
Live entertainment on stage is featured every night and on the last night there is a gala fire works display.

Entrance fee is $5 for each day. Parking can be a problem so come before 5 o'clock to get a good spot otherwise you will probably end up in the overflow field.

Onanda Park

by davecallahan

Every year we go to Onanda Park for our family picnics.
There are enclosed pavilions, charcoal stands, basketball courts, room for bocceball and badminton, a dock for launching canoes and small boats, and a small private beach for swimming.

If you want to stay overnite, over the weekend or for the week, they have cute cabins that can accomodate 2 (for the smaller units) or sleep 6 easily (in the larger units). Each cabin has unadorned beds (you provide linens or sleeping bags); unsupplied kitchen (you supply utensils for cooking and eating) with running water and a refrigerator; private cooking grill (you supply the charcoal and matches) and table outside the front door. sounds great!

There are a few catches: no alchohol, no pets, no bikes/skateboards riding within the park (there are plenty of places outside the park to do that), no weapons and you need a permit to launch the boat.

Prices range from $50 per night to $250 per week. Rate reductions for local residents.

to get there: take US-5/20 to connect to West Lake Road, go south and keep going 2miles until you see this tiny little sign for the park entrance. you will probably miss it the first time and have to backtrack to find it.

interesting facts:
the name for the park is a misuse of an Indian word for "pine tree".
the land once was a camp for young women and the original name of the area was "Shale Glen".
